oh god, just realized that we’re in for a lot of “that bastard Kubrick” takes inspired by Duvall’s death Duvall herself did not see things that way, and it’s a narrative that imagines her incredible Shining performance was not a product of her own talent and agency it’s insulting

Shelley Duvall expressed more than once, recently, that she considered Kubrick kind. The one who was really cruel to her in an exploitative way was Dr. Phil, who has never really been held accountable for running his interview with her before offering her help. Blaming Kubrick is the wrong move.

It's not like Kubrick's treatment of her is a rumor. There is a documentary where you can see it with your own eyes

He was an asshole but she wasn’t good in it because he was an asshole

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered people claiming that his abuse was the reason for her good performance. She gave a good performance despite it.

actually I have. several supposed film fans talk about it like that's the reason she was so overwhelmingly emotional, because he was terrorizing her. yes he was, but the work was her own.

As a culture, we need to find less accusatory ways of expressing ourselves

This sentiment turned out to be much more salient than I had any reason to expect.

some ideas are evergreen

Yeah I'm already seeing those. Kubrick was a dick, but like you said it takes away from her talent to just boil it down to Kubrick sucked.

I'm doing my part! bsky.app/profile/guys...
Bummer. Also, before it gets out of hand, Kubrick didn't cause her to have a mental breakdown.

Her performance in The Shining was Oscar nomination worthy at least, I will take no comments, fite me.

The idea her life was destroyed doesn't come from her--except to say making one of the greatest movies ever made was intense and difficult. It's more an internet embelishment. Yes, it is insulting.

It also just shows how ignorant people are of how film works. Yeah, The Shining was probably stressful to be on set for. That's just how movie sets are sometimes! You can have good folks who want to do it right, and that's still no guarantee that the shoot isn't going to drive you crazy.
