I have pictures with it both before and after the recent refurb! It used to be down in the gift shop - I was so happy when they moved it to the main hall. :D

I remember when it used to hang from the ceiling (1988 I think)

I once tweeted at the museum to ask them to help me identify two photos of modules I had taken at the museum. I knew what one was but couldn’t ID the other. They replied back that the second photo was the rear view of the same module. 😐🤦😆

RIGHT?? The 20th century was _insane_. From “maybe we can stay airborne for 60 seconds” to landing a human on the goddamn moon in one lifetime.

For the 100th aniversary the Science Museum in London had a display on the history of flight that was longer than the 1st flight 🤣✈️

I took a friend there when he was in town, he specifically requested it. Had a lot of fun exploring it. John Glenn once said he considered the Wright Brothers to be the first astronauts. “We just kept going a little bit higher and a little bit faster, each generation, but it started with them.”

Yeah it is fully unhinged to think that a human being, if they were born at the right time, could have personally witnessed the first flight and the moon landing in the same lifetime.

And see how little progress we’ve made since then. Grumble grumble.

I can see why the futuristic sci-fi was so fanciful in the 50s when you grew up in a culture that could see the rapid changes and advancements like that! The concept of traversing the stars had to feel like it was right around the corner.
