I am *so* excited to announce that I will be writing my first book! It’s about the woman who took on some of the most powerful men in sports, pushed to get women’s athletics into the modern Olympics, and whose efforts helped change how the world views who gets to be an athlete.

i've got a new story about the seemingly sinking ship that is the unc women's soccer program, which is now marked by allegations of a coach dating player, a mass exodus of transfers, and a lot of very, very unhappy players who feel deeply disrespected www.theassemblync.com/culture/spor...
Is the Long Reign of UNC Women's Soccer Over?www.theassemblync.com A parade of UNC women's soccer players left this year, and UNC investigated a coach. But athletes say those are just two signs of trouble.

Over @flaminghydra.com I did a sort of letter of recommendation for the animated TV series Molang—in which a bunny + their best friend, the bird Piu Piu, solve all sorts of quandaries (chicken pox! TV fame! getting stuck in the king's wig!) in under three minutes. flaminghydra.com/molang-at-ni...

It's not quite a proper obit, more like a fond remembrance for our dearly departed Lilly—the biggest fraidy cat who gradually became the bravest girl. Or, you could say, it's a PSA for why you should always check the box spring if your cat goes missing:
For Lilly, Always There | Defectordefector.com I didn’t see much of Lilly for the first five years of our life together. Or maybe it was four or six or some other number. I wasn’t really counting. In the pre-smartphone, pre-social media world, tra...

Did a Q&A with professor Margot Susca, who has studied private equity in journalism for years, on Fortress Investment Group, the group that gutted Vice—or, as she put it, "the locusts of the newspaper world." We discussed the private equity playbook, what it's done to the news, and what comes next.
"The Locusts Of The Newspaper World": How Fortress Investment Group Decimated Newspapers Before Gutting Vice | Defectordefector.com Vice News laid off hundreds of workers last month. It stopped publishing news on its website, and the company laid off workers from Vice-owned Refinery29, too. Vice Media CEO Bruce Dixon’s confusion a...

Jen talked with more than a dozen minor league players for this—which requires building a lot of trust—was able to show all the ways minor league baseball is *still* letting down players from non-English speaking countries. A great read covering a lot as we all get ready for baseball season ⤵️

For @flaminghydra.bsky.social I wrote about the National Weather Service and why its flesh-and-blood human beings are far more reliable than a weather app. (And I managed to do so while still following Elmore Leonard's sage advice: Never open with the weather.)

Yes, the Super Bowl is fun. Yes, Taylor Swift + Travis Kelce is the real-life romcom of the decade. And yes, the name and imagery used by Kansas City's NFL team are racist. Protestors will be at this year's game. And there's been a lot written + said about this. Here's a few sources 🧵
