Typical 1653 PhD: after surviving childhood, fourthborn son of an Earl, he was packed off to Oxford at age 15. After three years of approximately constant drunkenness and five duels with Nonconformists, he was granted his doctorate in Theology. He died of plague in 1666, £18,972 in debt (gambling)
