Finally reading Octavia Butler's PARABLE OF THE SOWER. I know everyone talks about how prescient it is, but I was honestly shook on the very first page.

Well that was fantastic.

When you read PARABLE OF THE TALENTS there’ll be a line that’ll make you scream and throw the book across the room.

I’m about 1/3 of the way through Parable of the Talents! So good. And so much yikes 😳

its not just the superficial similarities because those were drawing on reagan and the game has kind of been stuck on that for a long time, its the way it upends dystopian lit such that toppling the baddie is not The Solution, having a vision to work toward is what gets us through
Avatar
Seriously that was a hard one to discover earlier this year.

I own the book and I don't think I'll ever read it again simply because I don't know if I can emotionally weather it. It's brilliant, simply brilliant, but damn. If you aren't through it yet, uhm, prepare yourself. It's going to mess you up.
Avatar
It's so good, and so harrowing.

Yep, I’m reading it too and that freaked me out

Yoooooooooo. I didn't remember that part.

I have the kindle edition and can’t bring myself to read it. I am afraid it will take my depression and anxiety about real life to dangerous levels. I don’t know if that sounds cowardly, but it’s my truth.

I think this is my favorite Octavia Butler book!

Had this exact experience when I started it last week. It's an amazing book.

I listened to it in audiobook this week, and enjoyed it, but was not expecting to be as right-wing as it was... very prepper-y, and empathy is literally a weakness. Also, something done in the back half of the book would've had you or I tsktsked had we written it.

I had to pause my latest reread cuz it was freaking me out. Nostradamus wasn’t half as precise in his predictions.
Avatar
Read it last year and it is the most realistic version of the apocalypse. Hands down.

I’ve been meaning to read something by her then noticed that the main character in A Quiet Place: Day One was reading Dawn. I can tell from the first page this is going to be good.
