This screenshot illustrates how tough it is for GAI to become a useful academic research tool. Elicit, which is trying hard to be the "GAI for academics," only retrieves 2 of the many most important citations for my query, even when filtering for Q1 journals, likely because it lacks access to them.

Here's an example of how generative AI can be helpful. This is a halfway-decent start to an article. If I was having a writing block, this might get me moving. But it is no more than a scaffold for real academic writing, & it requires someone with expertise to turn it into a useful introduction.

Expertise is domain-specific.
The idea of “PhD level intelligence” is very funny to me, personally, because I have worked with scientists for 20 years. I know someone who has helped find treatments for diseases we didn’t even think were possible and also struggled to understand how the hot tap of a water cooler worked.

Lots of good points in here. I particularly resonated with the idea that if Generative AI companies put newspapers and other trusted sources out of business, there will be nothing left to train the models except junk, making GAI useless. www.platformer.news/how-to-stop-...

The abuse of public records to attack researchers, a thread: On Tuesday morning of this week (May 21), Matt Taibbi began to send me a series of messages requesting my response to a series of leading questions about public records that he planned to publish as part of an upcoming series of articles.

We're expecting a large set of our public records (ie emails) to be published in the coming days as part of an effort to smear folks working to understand & address online disinformation. We're setting up a site to help provide context. Here's the landing page: faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/PRR-...
