It's a mental association study. People associate kiki w/ pointy and bouba w/ round. Over 100 years of research have the effect in tons of languages across the planet (with a few notable exceptions), including in languages with no written component, and in pre-language infants
and notably those with autism disproportionately don't have those associations and seemingly label them at random
this explains why my brain hurt looking at these before i decided to riff about boobs
tbf that's the only way i can rationalise it (also the spiky one reminds me of ks)
it also gives rise to one of my favorite linguistics jokes (a niche genre, to be fair):
