Across 6 years, we marked common tern family members to study their provisioning behaviour & energy acquisition. The resulting paper, showing that both parents and offspring vary in quality, reflected in their feeding rate, is out now in Animal Behaviour: doi.org/10.1016/j.an...

Access to black-legged kittiwakes at the Middleton Island tower is unparalleled. >30 years of research on this banded population of known-history individuals by the Institite of #Seabirds Research and Conservation (ISRC) and still going. Lucky to be here studying kittiwake behavior and physiology.

Pelagic cormorants are slightly under-appreciated #seabirds on Middleton Island, Alaska. They are extra poopy and parasite-laden (the not-actually-joking joke is that when they regurgitate, the puke gets up and crawls away) but are also mesmerizing dinosaurs with stunning blue eyes.

A balmy mill-pond calm morning eventually gave way to wind and rain by dusk and the day's shearwaters reflected the conditions: c90 becalmed Balearics through the mrng and 500+ Manx streaming east during the evening. An Arctic Skua and 50+ Med Gulls also off the Bill. Just a new Reed W on the land.

Helping the Walney gull census earlier this week, some of the nests were very early with chicks looking about 10-14 days old! Early nesting is said to be a sign of a healthy gull colony. Numbers didn't feel significantly bigger than last year, but will wait for the warden to work out the final tally
