im watching a very bad tv show that is an adaptation of a book i really enjoyed. and its been soooo long since i watched a bad tv show - clunky, soapy, bad dialogue. and its kind of pleasurable? like eating those powdered sugar donuts that taste like sweet cardboard.

nah, it's called Apples Don't Fall, from a cheesy, soapy and wonderful liane moriarty book

I was going to guess The Magicians but in that case, I think the weaknesses are in the source material (still enjoyed the show though!)

I think Magicians is the rare case of the show/movie being better than the book.

Oh that's definitely true. I've read all three books and watched all the seasons and now I can't re-read the books, they suffer by comparison. They're not bad, just not as good.

I was thinking 3 Body Problem as well although I see it isn't. Some shows will never work if you've read the book first which is a shame since it's often the best, most innovative books.
