"Rx Kids is exploring what the program could look like outside of Michigan, too. Hanna said there is interest in both red and blue states that have unspent TANF dollars. 'We started this in Flint, but the intent was never to end in Flint,' Hanna said." Dream big. We can end child poverty.
Rx Kids could be a game changer for child poverty, at the most critical age for brain development. This is really smart.

I often share bad news, so here's some good news: Rx Kids, a promising guaranteed income program for pregnant women and infants in Flint, MI, is going to expand across much of Michigan! www.bridgedetroit.com/cash-program...
Cash program for moms and babies expected to expand across Michiganwww.bridgedetroit.com In Flint, where nearly 78% of children under five live in poverty, Rx Kids has so far distributed more than $2 million in cash to 828 families.

Domino effect of financial emergencies: that's a fact of life in poverty we often hear from first-person accounts of poverty. Many anti-poverty and anti-hunger benefit programs fail to take this into account, compounding financial crises instead of ameliorating them. www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcn...
Guaranteed income programs spread as more cities expand the anti-poverty safety netwww.nbcnews.com Across the country, city-led guaranteed income programs are delivering unrestricted payments to struggling households, including those ineligible for other aid. Conservative critics are pushing back.

Yes!! So many people could thrive if we held to this standard, and contribute wonderful things to society--but more importantly, they could be happy and healthy.

Yeah that’s my birthday weekend, so my first reaction was YES! I great to spend the whole weekend going to soccer games! But you’re right, it’ll be horrible for the pitch and therefore the players.

A chart from that report shows that the uninsured rate for Latino/Hispanic/Latine/Latinx is 18%, more than double the rate for white people (7%).

I wasn’t worried, just a little confused.

Some students badgered me to read Ayn Rand in college. Just from the premise, I refused. In political philosophy class a kid asked if they could do their paper on Rand and the prof said “I hope you mean Rand McNally”.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Project 2025 is full-on Nazi.
also and I feel like I buried the lede here: it calls for the people who CREATE queer media to be imprisoned. That'd be people like me. Or any other queer creator you love. Any queen who's been on drag race. Chappel Roan. Janelle Monae. Anyone who's made a piece of queer media. Imprisoned.

We’ll see in November, though we’ve been headed that way for a while now.

Pass it on with alt text
Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

Day #2 of the Republican National Convention: You'd think that seeing their leader nearly die would be upsetting to Republicans. Not at all. We spoke with delegates and the mood here is giddy. In all forms, political violence helps the MAGA cause. www.salon.com/2024/07/17/m...
Republicans at the convention aren't upset over Donald Trump's shooting — they're giddywww.salon.com RNC attendees aren't worried about safety — they're stoked over an excuse to "fight fight fight!"

trans people will do whatever they need to transition regardless of legislation. we will do it anyway. they know this. the reason they take it away or make it harder is purely because it results in more dead trans people. you cannot convince me otherwise.

If you add this labeller: @pronouns.adorable.mom You will see little pronoun tags above people's posts if they are also subscribed. No more accidental slip ups! You can then set your pronouns, or set it to "check profile" (I don't see the value in that personally but to each xir own)

Exactly. And no matter how bad things get, it can always get worse, and we can always work to make it less bad. People will need help. People need help now. So help. Don't give up. That's an excuse to not do anything.

Real evil is boring. Real evil can't be shot. Real evil can't be rooted out. Real evil is letting homeless folks die. Real evil is hiring laborers and playing with the books to steal their wages.

MAN I can't stand this. Fuck this. - organize your workplace - volunteer at a foodbank - introduce yourself to your neighbors - start a community garden - take firearms courses - donate to mutual aid There are TONS of things we can do that have nothing to do with electoral politics.

The thing I don't get about the DNC and the plans for homeless sweeps is, even if I am a purely cynical sociopath who doesn't care about poor people at all and just wants my convention to run smoothly, isn't it easier to just put people up in a hotel for a week?
