Got the nicest, complimentary query rejection today for a picture book manuscript that I think is my best work yet. It was so thoughtful! And generous. I just keep telling myself that publishing is a long game.

Hey #kidlit, I am super excited for my first kidlit festival in a few weeks— the Bigfoot Kids’ Book Festival in Redmond, Washington!

I keep reading about public vacation camps for farm women during the 1920s, and honestly there should be way more things like this. Affordable public weekend or week-long camps for women where they can learn practical things but also just make some friends and build community.

It is really horrible to see how bigoted and unwell Rowling is. I’ve never been into her work but Ishe has hundreds of millions of fans who have deep emotional connections to her work. I don’t understand how she can be so careless and cruel and relentlessly transphobic.

As I say over and over, libraries are unique among public institutions in according the same civic status to children as it does to all other patrons. To compromise minors’ access to the library’s resources is to my mind a betrayal of the purpose of the public library as a democratic institution. 📚

I am not blaming library workers for being forced into this position, but it devastates me to see how the core democratic promise of public libraries—that EVERYONE is eligible to be a patron in their own right, to use the library with no interference by anyone else—is utterly broken here. 📚

I very strongly agree with this. For the average author without a major platform, the best questions to ask yourself are “How can I celebrate my book in a way I find meaningful and fun? How can I have interesting conversations with other book lovers?” Any sales increase is an unexpected bonus.

In most cases, there is only so much an author can do to move the needle on sales. Unless you’re a celebrity (or perhaps doing non fiction), you’re not expected to be the major sales force for the book. Point is, it’s not the authors job to to a better job than the sales team to sell their book /

also and I feel like I buried the lede here: it calls for the people who CREATE queer media to be imprisoned. That'd be people like me. Or any other queer creator you love. Any queen who's been on drag race. Chappel Roan. Janelle Monae. Anyone who's made a piece of queer media. Imprisoned.

Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

I'm not smart enough to know if keeping Joe or ditching Joe is the right call when it comes to defeating Donald Trump, but I _know_ Kamala would go on Hot Ones, and I doubt either of the other guys would, so that gives her the edge, I think.
