People who were repeatedly vaccinated for COVID-19 — initially receiving shots aimed at the original variant, followed by boosters and updated vaccines targeting variants — generated antibodies capable of neutralizing a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 variants and even some distantly related coronaviruses.
Repeat COVID-19 vaccinations elicit antibodies that neutralize variants, other viruses | Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louismedicine.wustl.edu Response to updated vaccine is shaped by earlier vaccines yet generates broadly neutralizing antibodies

Why does this paper begin, "The covid pandemic is over..."? That is untrue.
Avatar
It *must* be a typo, right?
Avatar
Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, no scientist would ever write that, right?
Avatar
Seems like a pretty solid source.

Since the sentence that claims that then immediately follows it up by saying that people are still being hospitalized by it, I think they mean that medically speaking the pandemic *is* over, because the disease is now endemic. Though they could be clearer on that.

Last I heard, the WHO still classifies it as a pandemic even tho they called an end to the international public health emergency.
Avatar
Seems like they just haven't gotten around to updating that verbiage.

Michael, everything the WHO and CDC do in regard to communication is deliberate. Word choice is everything with public healrh comms! WHO tripled down on not airbourne, but droplets, for years. I would regard their sustained use of pandemic as deliberate.
Avatar
Exactly. Until the WHO declares it over, it's still a pandemic.

Which is why I think better contextually-clarifying language is needed here; this could also be interpreted to mean the federal gov’t response state. However, I also think that semantic issue shouldn’t override the remarkable data from the study presented here.

Wut. It's got animal reservoirs, it's endemic. Most scientists agree on this.
Avatar
You are exactly right.

It's at the stage of a broad epidemic. However, every single wave edges on pandemic again. If we don't neutralize it through universal vaccination and responsive mask mandates and lockdowns, in areas of high hospitalization rates, we will never be done with it.
Avatar
It's another flu. That's where it's at right now.
Avatar
likely right, and yes, it needs clarity.
Avatar
No doctor would write that. Scientists certainly might.
Avatar
Dutch and Swedish doctors would write that. My allergist asks me why am I still wearing a mask. I'm sure my file has a note saying I'm hysterical 🫠
Avatar
Wait. Your allergist, someone who deals with allergies, is wondering why someone with allergies would wear a mask when many allergens are airborne? What.

Most ppl in this country have completely internalised an ableist and eugenecist approach to life. It's a mix of neoliberalism with nature knows best. Mind you, I'm doing quite OK, fellow Dutchies with chronic diseases are screwed.

The really stupid part is that immune compromised patients were advised to wear a mask outside the home BEFORE the pandemic, and suddenly it's bad for them to do so. The same goes for any time an epidemic surges in an area.
