People who were repeatedly vaccinated for COVID-19 — initially receiving shots aimed at the original variant, followed by boosters and updated vaccines targeting variants — generated antibodies capable of neutralizing a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 variants and even some distantly related coronaviruses.
Repeat COVID-19 vaccinations elicit antibodies that neutralize variants, other viruses | Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louismedicine.wustl.edu Response to updated vaccine is shaped by earlier vaccines yet generates broadly neutralizing antibodies

Why does this news never spread but all of the antivax stuff spreads like... a plague??? This seems like a big story. Meanwhile, the unvaxxed who have had it 5+ times by now are going to start having some issues.

I feel bad for this kid I know whose parents have had COVID multiple times a year each year inc during the pregnancy That kid didn’t choose that
Avatar
They're both going to end up with heart attacks that just "came out of nowhere." 😬 There's no way they won't be incapacitated in a big way from that.
Avatar
And then antivaxxers will lie and say they died of a "clot shot."
Avatar
its much more profitable to tell people information they want to hear than information they dont
Avatar
Exactly! And notice that certain crappy information isn’t behind a paywall, yet the important information is?

Humans are unfortunately wired to respond more to answer and fear

I feel like the answer to the question "Why does this y but this worse thing z" the answer is more often than not, at least in this matter, capitalism. News costs money to produce. Fan fiction authors are cheap and often volunteer.
Avatar
Because this news is boring and expected. That other stuff is interesting and new and unique and spits in the face of "experts" and "people who study shit."

I *knew* I was going to end up with superpowers from that amazing mRNA cocktail!
Avatar
Why does this paper begin, "The covid pandemic is over..."? That is untrue.
Avatar
It *must* be a typo, right?
Avatar
Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, no scientist would ever write that, right?
Avatar
Seems like a pretty solid source.
Avatar
Since the sentence that claims that then immediately follows it up by saying that people are still being hospitalized by it, I think they mean that medically speaking the pandemic *is* over, because the disease is now endemic. Though they could be clearer on that.
Avatar
Last I heard, the WHO still classifies it as a pandemic even tho they called an end to the international public health emergency.
Avatar
Avatar
likely right, and yes, it needs clarity.
Avatar
No doctor would write that. Scientists certainly might.
Avatar
Dutch and Swedish doctors would write that. My allergist asks me why am I still wearing a mask. I'm sure my file has a note saying I'm hysterical 🫠
Avatar
Wait. Your allergist, someone who deals with allergies, is wondering why someone with allergies would wear a mask when many allergens are airborne? What.

"Though an endemic is a constant presence in a community, it differs from a pandemic because the virus is somewhat contained and not spreading out of control and not stressing the health care infrastructure, therefore we can more easily prevent and treat it." www.lung.org/blog/epidemi....
Epidemic, Pandemic and Endemic: What is the difference?www.lung.org The hope is that COVID-19 vaccines and new treatment options will move us into an endemic state. But what is the difference between a pandemic and endemic and what does this mean for us?
Avatar
•squints at 'not stressing health care'•
Avatar
If healthcare faints or dies is it still stressed?
Avatar
If healthcare staff become disabled for months or years or permanently, or die, attrition stresses healthcare... >_>
Avatar
Well, yeah, but like, what if it just took a nap or didn't wake up. Is it stressed? Cause it sure looks like it's not going to be around much longer with Cheeto on the horizon.
Avatar
Lol. " not stressing the healthcare system." Like, doctors and nurses now are constantly sick, including my own GP
Avatar
Things are endemic when they exist in predictable numbers in a population. Look at a covid graph. Literally any covid graph. Is that what you see?
Avatar
Haven't we crossed over into "endemic" status?
Avatar
Avatar
fwiw, ppl often misunderstand that outbreaks, endemicity +pandemic can be concurrent. the idea that 'endemic' means milder isn't correct, it only means ~entrenched in a certain area~ covid= all 3 of these. outbreaks various places, endemic to lots of areas, +pandemic (global outbreaks happening)
Avatar
Ty for clarifying this for readers.
Avatar
you're very welcome🙏

The woman at the ER yesterday boarded in the hall w/COVID coughing spread it to untold number of ppl. We aren't tracking any of it so there will be no way to know. We can pretend it's gone. It's not.
Avatar
related, from a CDC update: "Effective May 1, 2024, hospitals are no longer required to report COVID-19 hospital admissions, hospital capacity, or hospital occupancy data to HHS" but bet your bottom dollar we'll still hear "don't worry hospitalizations low" as next surges come 🫠
Avatar
Yep, cutting off data supply to manipulate publuc opinion. Criminal.
Avatar
Yup, I thought the same thing.
Avatar
This is not how publuc health should be done. My friendly who are seriously immunocompromised now avoid going to the doctors
Avatar
I am immune compromised but had to go to the ER. I was wearing my Aura but still I am nervous now. I had no choice but to go.
Avatar
No. Still multiple waves a year and WHO classifies it as a pandemic still. We just exited the emergency phase.
