The EA cult at the heart of silicon valley is just the culmination of the whole ethos, which is based on such a failed understanding of systems, humanity, value, purpose, ethics and people.
They're only open about it now because they've amassed enough power they think they're untouchable.

There may have been an altruistic drive in there somewhere early on, but the 'effective' approach quickly turned it into "I should have all the money and power to make whatever decisions I personally think are best, acquired by courting the richest and most venal billionaires in the world"
at some point EA got taken over by people who think Proust is a type of beer and thus have very strange ideas about both altruism and how to measure efficacy
The article about Balaji doesn't mention EA. I think EA was a bit more confusing and there were different factions - some were more in the 'donate more to good causes' givewell camp, then factions way more in the rationalist, transhumanism, extropism camps.
The hubris of being amongst the greatest beneficiaries of openness (people, capital, knowledge, legal) and not understanding what keeps the pinnacle so very high.
It’s going to be a long, long fall from the heights of that pinnacle.
