I thought this was an interesting development, I know people are using laser pickups or something now so there's no contact too but not sure if full 3D scans are possible for copying yet, need to find more recent stuff

not sure if you're interested, but there's another type of electron microscope that works the same way as a record player - scanning tunneling microscopes
