Fantastic holiday thread
Mark Twain hated the Fourth of July. He was often invited to speak at Independence Day festivities. His audiences assumed that his reliably unpatriotic remarks were tongue-in-cheek jests. But he meant that shit. 1/9

I spent some time reading the speech aloud just for my own pleasure at its beautiful, damning periods, imagining what Douglass himself must have sounded like, and how increasingly uncomfortable his audience must have become as the speech went on.
Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

Preorder!
You may not know it, but pre-orders help writers. They give bookstores and publishers a way to gauge the interest in a book. If you want a signed copy of the book, you can order a copy through my local independent book store, Seminary Coop. Here is the link: www.semcoop.com/dragon-chica... 🗃️

Can someone explain to me what spammers hope to gain by texting me "Hi" from unknown numbers? It's getting really annoying.

Hello PNW folks. Guess what time it is? That’s right! It is historic heatwave time! Aside from the normal checking in on your neighbors and making sure your house is prepped to keep cool, remember that the local wildlife and plants need help too… 🌱🧵

I dunno, man. Everything is so dire. There seemed nothing for it but to escape for an hour into Queer Eye season 8. It turns out to be a good idea.

Disturbing story. There are no "good guy" corporations.
🧵 In 2020, I nearly died from mysterious industrial chemical exposure at my apartment. Later, I discovered my employer was dumping toxic waste into our windows from their Skunkworks semiconductor fab next-door. I tipped off US EPA, who then raided them in 2023. EPA sent me the report on Friday. 💀 ⬇️

The correct response to Chevron being overturned is for every single environmental group to start filing millions of lawsuits, right now, today, arguing that various regulatory decisions didn't go far enough. Absolutely flood the zone.

I do my best to keep up with what's happening in law, justice, and politics. I really do. I take my duties as a citizen seriously. But today I am in despair. The sun is out and I think I need to pull my cloak of willful ignorance around me, go walk in the park, and tune out for a day or so.

If you’re in the UK and your postal vote didn’t arrive yet, today is when you can start chasing it up and have them send another. If it did arrive, send it back with your “get the Tories out” box ticked!

I haven't really gone anywhere for five years. I'm taking a big trip involving air travel in September, and honestly, I'm pretty sure it will be my last. Like, ever. How to be, when I know I'm probably seeing overseas friends for the last time?

I've made an effort to change my lifelong thinking from F to C (because I like being part of the wider world). I've done pretty well with oven temps, but it's a really hard change to make when considering what to wear, or whether to go outside.
I’m all for the metric system except for temperatures. Please don’t tell me it’s 38 degrees Celsius when what you’re actually saying is it’s over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I need the big number to know how goddam hot it actually is.

Great insight in this thread about the how, why, and maybe why-not of trying to read more.
This summer will mark a year into my project to read some of the hundreds of books I've bought, started and abandoned reading over the years. It has taught me something that feels significant. /1
