There are a lot of reasons Theo is the best dog in the world, but his absolute steadfast refusal to concern himself with fireworks — even when they’re going off directly outside our living room window — is high on the list.

I’ve been trying to shed enemies lately because most of them are not worth my energy, but I will make a full-time job out of destroying people who involuntarily sign me up for their Substacks.

I just think if I were a college sophomore and a very prominent nepo baby, I would spend my time doing literally anything other than emailing professors at my university, using their first names, defending my famous father.

The Columbia Daily Spectator staff wrote and photographed an entire cover package for New York Magazine, I am so ridiculously proud of them!!! www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/05...

I’m building a database of media contacts for book purposes, and I’m categorizing people as “personal friend” or “professional contact,” and goddamn has this given me a complex about who falls where and whether I have any actual “personal friends” lol.

I have gotten a few questions about how to donate to student journalism outlets without supporting Columbia itself. The Columbia Spectator is an independent nonprofit with zero financial ties to the university, if you want to kick them some money.

Canadians are built different. I just overheard a teacher tell her class of first-graders they could go outside without jackets because "it's so nice outside." It is 38 degrees.

I'm the chair of the Spectator's board of trustees, and I cannot tell you how proud I am to see what they're doing while *also taking finals.* Volunteer your time to help young people in your industry; I can guarantee they'll impress you.
There is so much breathless commentary and speculation about what is happening on Columbia's campus. But we actually have some very good student journalists we can turn to with first hand reporting. I suggest everyone check it out. columbiaspectator.com

Okay but I genuinely don't know why everyone is talking about how private equity ruins the world today in particular... because I've been offline trying to finish my book about how private equity ruins the world. Is it because of Red Lobster?

There is a special place in hell for authors and publishers who put out dense nonfiction books — the type likely to be relied on by other authors and researchers — that do not include an index.

Nine years ago I came thisclose to unmatching a hot doctor on Tinder because it turned out he lived across a damn ocean. Good thing I didn’t!

There’s so much handwringing over what to tell young journalists about the industry and not nearly enough about journalism professors trying to scare off brilliant Black freshmen with absolute bullshit like this.

While discussing the canon of great blogs with @mckinneykelsey.bsky.social this morning, as one does, I was yet again reminded of the best blog of all time, Rosa Lyster on Slavoj Žižek. medium.com/the-hairpin/...

Finally, a very stupid, very fitting official RIP to Deadspin, once a good website.

Update: Now suffering a life-threatening morale crash because it turns out the state I'm fighting suggests but does not require towns to waive fees for journalists!!!
God, few things get me as energized as an email debate with a FOIA officer who wants to die on the hill of "books are not journalism" and charge me $746 for records that are very much in the public interest. I simply love to fight!

10 years ago, if a story got taken down, esp for questioning power too much, there'd be weeks-long rioting. now it's like the part in Clue where the gang goes in the kitchen, finds a new dead body, and instead of freaking out, trudges sullenly back to the drawing room web.archive.org/web/20240301...
