"The preliminary results upended widespread predictions of a clear victory for the National Rally," says the NYT just now. Wait, who made these predictions of a massive victory for the National Rally again? Oh yeah, these guys did:

Mark Robinson's campaign is now trying to spin away the significance of his violent rant. North Carolina reporter Rob Schofield does a nice job cutting through the campaign's talking points and showing why his comments are so concerning: bsky.app/profile/greg...
NEWS --> Mark Robinson, the MAGA extremist GOP nominee for governor in North Carolina, appeared to endorse political violence against unnamed foes in a recent speech. "Some folks need killing!" he shouted. "It's a matter of necessity!" Video and story here: newrepublic.com/article/1834...
MAGA Gov Candidate’s Ugly, Hateful Rant: “Some Folks Need Killing!”newrepublic.com Mark Robinson, the GOP nominee for governor in North Carolina, has a long history of incendiary comments. But he may have topped himself this time.

The question I have, @normative.bsky.social and @kenwhite.bsky.social, is whether this footnote complicates matters a bit.

[email protected] is one of the few noting there are *also* serious risks w/nominating alternative to Biden. As I suggested, we also can't be sure an alternative would fare better against Trump! Still, I lean toward thinking Bidens should take Q of whether he should withdraw a lot more seriously
Unlike many others On Here, I don't think there's a way for Biden to bow out without it leading to extreme risks of a very different kind. We need more of an acknowledgment from the replace-Biden camp that this is not a remotely easy dilemma. newrepublic.com/article/1832...

Whatever the Bidens end up deciding, it's baffling that they seem to think it would somehow reflect badly on his career to bow out. Screen cap on left: NYT on the Bidens' thinking Screen cap on right: My suggestion that this isn't a good way to think about the situation

CNN let down the country with their awful debate format. The no-fact-checking ended up making Trump's endless lies sound plausible. Two things can be true: This was a total disaster from a journalistic point of view, and Biden blew a big opportunity. newrepublic.com/article/1832...

WH chief of staff Jeff Zients tells me he and other admin officials are making an expansive case to CEOs that a good business climate depends on stability and the rule of law. He talked to me about the case he made to the Business Roundtable recently. 2/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...

Former American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault has been privately arguing to executives that stability and the rule of law matter. Notable: Chenault tells me some execs respond that they don't think 1/6 can happen again! Astonishing head-in-the-sand stuff. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...

In recent days, a few billionaires endorsed Trump. Then he shocked the Business Roundtable with his incoherence. Jeffrey Sonenfeld said CEOs see Trump's economic plans as potentially disastrous. It now looks like the idea of a big shift is overstated. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/1831...

To put this plainly, at least some corporate leaders seem to be supporting Trump precisely because he's offering them a corrupt oligarchy in which they get a juicy cut of the spoils. Still, the bigger story here is that there is no stampede to Trump. 5/5 newrepublic.com/article/1831...

Credit to WaPo for finding the time and space to offer a minimal corrective to Trump's latest vile demagoguery on "migrant crime." This isn't that hard!
Avatar
Amazing. This is how NYT describes Trump-MAGA's degenerate propaganda that cherry picks isolated awful killings to smear millions of undocumented immigrants with vile terms like "migrant crime." No context showing how absurd it is. No hint that it's historically dangerous language.
Avatar
It's hard to overstate how ubiquitous the highlighting of "migrant crime" has become in right wing info spaces. Trump brings it up at rallies. MAGA lawmakers put it on T-shirts. Fox News puts mug shots on screens and highlights crimes in chyrons. 2/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...
Avatar
Right now Trump/MAGA personalities are all hyping the horrific killing of a young Maryland mom. Fox reported that the alleged killer is a "gotaway," which is supposed to indict Biden. But this actually undermines their case, as I try to explain here. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...
Avatar
This alleged killer got in after repeat crossings under Title 42. But that undermines MAGA's case! It shows he got in when maximum asylum restrictions first implemented by Trump were in effect! And Trump released hundreds of thousands, too. More below. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...

James Carville says Biden should respond by directly telling Trump this: “When I took over from you, crime in the United States was rising. We are now in one of the greatest declines in crime we’ve had in modern American history.” 5/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...

Biden's protections for undocumented spouses of US citizens provides an opening for a contrast with Trump, who would deport all those people and all other undocumented immigrants. Biden can say he will keep American families together, Trump would rip them apart. 6/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...
Avatar
Time for more coverage of this. What about stand-alone NYT news analyses highlighting Trump-MAGA pattern of cherry-picking "migrant crimes," showing how absurdly it's being used, and quoting experts warning of the historical dangers of this trope? 7/ newrepublic.com/article/1829...

There's a key tell in the Fox/MAGA attacks on Biden's policy: They all try to change the subject back to *the border.* That's odd, because this policy is all about immigrants who have lived here for a decade or more. I've collected some of these attacks below. 2/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
This is ugly stuff. Fox/MAGA personalities are linking Biden's policy to a horrific murder. RNC says the killing was done by a "BIDEN ILLEGAL." Fox is juxtaposing the new policy with footage of hordes swarming the border and even migrant mug shots. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
It's a disgusting smear. This policy will benefit 500,000 people who have lived in the US for at least a decade, are married to Americans, have deep roots in communities across the country, and in many cases are *raising American children.* 4/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
Republicans are blasting the policy as an abuse of power. But the undocumented spouses of US citizens are already allowed to apply for green cards. Biden's move just allows them to remain here while they access that process, rather than leave the country first. 5/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
Other Rs are arguing that the policy will encourage more illegal border crossing. But Biden's executive action only applies to people who have *already* been here for 10 years as of mid-June! Check out one expert's quote on this below. It's a keeper. 6/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
MAGA is screaming "abuse of power!" But Congress gave the executive the discretion to grant parole for "urgent humanitarian reasons" or "significant public benefit." That clearly applies here. If you want the details on this, I've got you covered. 7/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
Some news: Dozens of legal scholars have signed a letter defending Biden's move as a faithful exercise of the executive's parole authority, in keeping with the law’s intent to create tools to treat certain migrants humanely in unforeseen circumstances. 8/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
It's revealing that Fox/MAGA are responding to Biden's move by screaming "LOOK OVER THERE AT THE BORDER!!!" They can't allow the focus to be on longtime immigrant residents, who are deeply integrated into US life and are widely viewed sympathetically. 9/ newrepublic.com/article/1828...
Avatar
Biden's asylum restriction led some to claim vindication for Trumpism. That's simplistic. His approach also involves making immigration/integration easier in orderly ways. He can now make this about more than the border. My read of the politics below. 10/ pro.twitter.com/i/decks/1676...
