today and every day I think about how my job of supporting digital scholarship and digitally informed research - esp with an eye on text and data mining - was made possible by Aaron Swartz
RIP Aaron Swartz who as programmer helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons; and the Markdown format. "When he tried to liberate data from an academic website, US authorities responded with $1m fine and 35 years in jail. Then he took his own life."
Aaron Swartz: hacker, genius… martyr?www.theguardian.com Aaron Swartz campaigned for a free and open internet. But after he fell foul of US authorities, he took his own life. His former girlfriend tells Elizabeth Day of her anger at his treatment

A complex website with all the bells and whistles is a pony. And you have to keep feeding and cleaning up after it until it dies or you euthanize it.
@paigecmorgan.bsky.social related thought but not directly applicable to your thread: I have so many researchers who want a website and then balk completely at the thought of actually having to do the thing to make the website happen. No uncommon ofc but am reminded of the dislike of a reality ✅

I worry sometimes that my criticism of the NYT is written off as disgruntled former employee whining. Please listen when us former employees say that with a legacy like this, the shit there runs deep.
This is beyond the normalization of publications like the Times at the time. But the Times specifically was wrong on Hitler, wrong on MLK Jr, wrong on Ida B Wells, wrong on the famine in ukraine, wrong on weapons of mass destruction. Being wrong somehow isn't disqualifying.

We find that leading LLMs, especially GPT-4 and GPT-4o, can recognize both common and uncommon fixed poetic forms—like sonnets, sestinas, and pantoums—at surprisingly high accuracy levels. But they do much worse with unfixed forms, like aubades and odes.

Poetry is weirdly prominent in LLM conversations. But what do models really "know" about poetry? We tested how well LLMs can recognize 20+ poetic forms in English & probed major pretraining datasets to see which poems might be memorized. New preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2406.18906

How did no one tell me that Ayo Edebiri got emotional over the Great Molasses Flood?? (via GBH)

:dons librarian hat: Digital preservation is more expensive than preserving paper; it takes more staff, active attention, and consistent computing resources. Libraries have discussed “digital dark age” since the 1990s. Corp archives often 1st to go b/c suits haven’t figured out how to profit.
One of the interesting things about the Internet is that we’re actually living through a dark age. Future historians are unlikely to have records of this period. Paper and ink last. Digital storage, less so. variety.com/2024/tv/news...
