I fear that Lincoln’s maxim is coming to pass. I’d love to be proven wrong, and I’m fighting to remain optimistic, but the system has failed every step of the way to prevent an unstable demagogue from returning to power.

The ruling "cannot be the rule for any functioning democracy." Granting a president immunity for trying to overthrow an election "removes the principal check on presidential abuses of authority in our democratic system: the vote...It is in this sense that the Court’s opinion is truly lawless."

One advantage of being a historian in a fairly crappy news week is consolation and reassurance: people have got through bad times before, nothing last forever (good or bad), and truth has a habit of overcoming lies in the end because reality provides the occasional short sharp audit.

Always good to take down VDH's simplistic nonsense.
I wrote this takedown of Victor Davis Hanson's Carnage and Culture (2004) at the Other Platform, but why not bring it over: Here is a not-even-close-to-exhaustive list of serious defects w/ VDH's famous(ly damaging) book, which you shouldn't read (both this thread and the book). 1/

A reminder, on this Juneteenth, that the events leading to the end of slavery in the South involved a complex process that included federal policies, armies in the field, and the actions of enslaved men and women. 🗃️ dsl.richmond.edu/emancipation/

I need to read Bloch again. It’s been over thirty years since I first read his Historian’s Craft.
Today's the anniversary of the Nazis executing Marc Bloch. Or, someone who could sit with uncertainty, champion inquiry & trying to understand, and recognise plurality & perplexity. And, in that knowledge, made the choice not to remain passive. Bloch, Historian’s Craft (MUP, 1992), pp. 64, 119, 160.

I will scream it until I die - public universities and immigration are our super powers
When I started at UNC in 1990, the university was ranked in the top twenty of *all* colleges nationally. And if I’m remembering correctly the in-state tuition was just $500 a semester. It was just an incalculably valuable public good, which is why the NC GOP made it their mission to destroy it.
