22 years ago on 9/11, I was a chief resident at Bellevue Hospital in NYC, nearly 8 months pregnant with my first child. I saw the second tower fall from my office window. The team at Bellevue prepared for a tidal wave of patients that never arrived. I’ll never forget.

Gun violence in the US is a policy choice. But a lot of people treat it as a weather event, like an act of nature that we can't predict or control, as if being caught in a crossfire is as unlucky as being caught in an unexpected downpour. We, as a nation are now inured to the frequent gun violence.

The Daily Tar Heel is the independent student newspaper for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. their front page for 8/30 is texts sent and received by students during the active shooter lockdown. absolutely stunning.
