Indeed, the only reason they can't say "Israelites" here is because there's such little archaeological evidence of there being a sovereign Kingdom of Israel they have to say "Canaanites" or whatever. For most of its recorded history Israel and Judas, as Jewish states, were tributaries of Empires
The Kingdom of Israel has barely any evidence showing it existed for any substantial length of time, the various Jewish-ruled states of Israel after that period all had overlords (Assyrian, Babylonian, Achaemanid, Persian then finally Romano-Greek) until the events of the New Testament.
So the idea that there was this Sovereign Jewish state in ancient history with a genetically discrete Jewish population is complete ahistorical nonsense.
