That hits hard, doesn't it? Americans want to see ourselves as the Federation so bad, but the Cardassian Union is so much closer to the truth.

Although I think that DS9 is the best Trek, I will give TNG this: in their pilot episode, they gave a glimpse at what life on Earth was like before Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism. The Federation is what we _want_ to be, "evil" space empires are what we are (or could be).
