When you look up a word in the dic•tio•nary, the dots in the middle of the word aren't there to mark out the syllables of the word; they mark where you can put a hyphen if the word doesn't fit on one line. Sometimes that corresponds with syllables, sometimes not. (See "dictionary" above!)
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

This morning I discovered a Middle Breton translation by @klud.bsky.social of JRR Tolkien's poem on the Rings of Power (over in the Dark Realm: twitter.com/Huaka/status...). Inspired by this, I couldn't resist the temptation of laying my hands on a version of the same in Old Irish... /1

Agathe Thornton, one of New Zealand's most prominent 20th century classicists, taught at the University of Otago from 1948 to 1974. When she was hired, at age 37, she had one article in print. In a different field. And three pages long. Her second publication came 14 years later. Different times.

As part of work on a Greek vocabulary list and a revamping of vocab.perseus.org planned later this year, I'm putting together a corpus representative of texts typically read (in Greek) by language learners. If anyone has thoughts, pointers to existing work or would like to be involved, let me know.
