One of the coolest insects around and something I've wanted to see for a while, a mantidfly! These wondrous mash-ups are not mantises, nor flies, but are in the same family as lacewings. Very cool. ππΏπ§ͺ
Four-spotted Mantidfly (Dicromantispa interrupta) 13 39 241
I feel like the mantidfly is what youβd get if evolution drew the word βnerdβ from the Pictionary deck. I love them 1 11
Leave them alone!!! They're trying their best!!!! π 4
The legs are so interesting! And it really does look like a mashup of a mantis and a dragonfly. 1 5
What scientists call "convergent evolution," mother nature calls "a remix" if it worked for Taylor Swift it's good enough for me! π 3
It looks like some one put it together with random parts, lol. What an interesting bug! 2
They looked at regular mantids and thought, βLove the raptorial forelegs, but how about we put ours on the other way βround.β 1 2
Itβs amazing they work at all. 1
I'm sorry, what? I didn't know they were related to lacewings, but now that you mention it, I see the resemblance. 2
Resembles one of those shrimp that punches things. 2
this bug is a living Exquisite Corpse drawing πΉ 1
The eyes are stunning. And the front... um, feet? look like Venus flytraps. Great shot & glad you shared! 1
Holy shit that's extremely convincing 1
This looks like something AI would dream up 1 1
It does, like something assembled from spare parts.
Dang⦠and here I thought snakeflies were the cool kids of the family. Neato!! 1
