Happy 4th of July! In the wise words of Ben Franklin: The Bald Eagle is a Bird of bad moral Character. Too lazy to fish for himself. The Turkey is a more respectable Bird, though vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would attack a Brit who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.

Did Franklin actually want a turkey for the Great Seal of the United States? It is widely believed he was joking when he wrote to his daughter about selection of the bird. You can read the whole letter and learn more about the history here: declaration.fas.harvard.edu/blog/turkey
Unsullied by Falsehood: Ben Franklin and the Turkeydeclaration.fas.harvard.edu One of the most popular Thanksgiving-related myths in American history is the notion that Benjamin Franklin preferred the turkey as the national symbol of the United States, over the bald eagle. This ...
Love this bit of history. Thanks!

I used to keep turkeys. The first year we thought our turkey hens had caught some terrible disease. They would throw themselves on the ground and pant heavily. Turns out my ex-husbands habit of wearing a blue boiler suit with a red beanie made him the sexiest tom turkey ever. They were simply horny.

Omg, that’s amazing. 🤣🤣🤣

Having to choose between a bird of bad moral character too lazy to fish for himself or a vain and silly bird is about as American as it gets.

Go back to Canada, illegal immigrant! Just be sure you flew here doesn't mean you can stay. *For clarity, I'm talking to the Canada Goose, nature's most annoying dinosaur.*

Yeah we don't want 'em back, you can keep em, or send it on to Mexico.

Canada geese are much more friendly than wild turkeys.

Maybe so, but I’ve never been attacked by a wild turkey.

I've been threatened by wild turkeys, but kept my distance.

But turkeys are indigenous to the Americas, so the founders couldn't let THAT be a symbol of the nation they wanted to build.
Avatar
... do you think Bald Eagles aren't? I'm confused.

Their range also includes Eastern Asia. Turkeys originated in North America and didn't go beyond that before European colonization. Also, authoritarians and fascists really love eagles as their symbol even if it's not the bald eagle in particular.

An expansive range doesn't make an animal not indigenous. Also, I cannot find any evidence that Bald Eagles are native to eastern asia at all, I can only find one instance of a bald eagle getting blown over there. The rest of the eagles found in asia are Sea Eagles. The last point is irrelevant.

Eagles are bullies and they're nasty. The ones here in the Florida panhandle eat roadkill. I'm team turkey.

Maybe thats why they’re always attacking mailmen- they think all uniformed government officials are invading soldiers

And do not mess with a wild momma turkey protecting her chicks. She will straight up come for you.

Everything wrong with America can be traced back to choosing the bald eagle over the turkey
