As a side note on trotting, the term causes much confusion, as I've experienced this week w/media coverage. Scientifically, a trot involves diagonal limbs moving in near-synchrony; that's all. It does not mean moving at intermediate speed ("jogging"), and bipeds don't do it.

Keep your eyes on baby pygmy hippo at start of this video (adult does a nice trot, in addition). This gait isn't ever seen in the larger common hippo. Which, as we note in our paper, raises awesome evolutionary biomechanics questions. Follow-up studies! www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmsZ...

Say what you will about the UK, but the quick transition of power and the lack of election denial are refreshing to see.

Ran across this section from Muybridge's classic "Animals in Motion" volume. Quite a few words to say, "I don't know anything here, really" on how hippos move. And a poignant little quotable about extinction... 🦛

I'm sad that Anne Innis Dagg didn't live to see our hippo study. We cite a bunch of her papers. She did excellent work collecting empirical data on the locomotion of a wide range of ungulates. Too overlooked due to concurrent work by Hildebrand and others. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Does anyone know details on this?
I seem to remember from a few months ago that there was a disabled in steam group going around on Bluesky. I meant to look into it deeper, but, of course, I lost track of the post and couldn't find it again.

I'm looking to do more for #disability in #academia. If you want a speaker for an event etc. in this theme, please contact me. I'd even enjoy just talking informally w/academics about lived experiences as disabled persons. #DisabledAcademic #AcademicChatter #DisabledInSTEM

This is paper convincingly and entertainingly argues that a.) Tyrannosaur skeletons are effectively cursed objects of great power and that b.) being in close proximity to a discovered one is probably one of the worst things that can happen to you

2nd PhD chapter of #DAWNDINOS graduate is out in Paleobiology w/Bishop, Tsai, me & Houssaye. We show there was only 1 way to become a giant bipedal #dinosaur by studying a lot of theropod femora. Come for the cool morphology, stay for the 3D geometric morphometrics! www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

At the Royal Society in London for this event featuring Dr. Anthony Fauci, "Scientific, Public Health, and Policy Lessons from HIV/AIDS and COVID-19". I've been looking forward to this! Coincidentally, I received a NHS invite for a fresh COVID-19 booster shot today and booked it.

Imagine being rich and wanting to do boring shit like hoard money when you can do things like this instead
Rupert Grint said his childhood dream job was to be an ice cream truck driver, so he bought an ice cream truck with the money he made from the Harry Potter movies and drove around the English countryside giving free ice cream to children. Literally living the dream
