Good news: In 8 years, electricity generation from non-fossil-fuel sources (including nuclear) rose by 44% Bad news: In the same period, global electricity output increased 23% and generation by fossil fuels reached an all-time peak.

“…past predictions of global warming have proved largely correct. To persist with scepticism is immoral and stupid. Even a free-market fanatic cannot deny that environmental externalities are a form of market failure. Climate is the biggest externality of all.”

By not being at the bad place, y’all are missing this absolute banger of a thread from @volts.wtf. Like him, I don’t care who is the Democratic nominee.

Read this great thread below. We can build a climate community on Bluesky. Here’s a starter pack for folks to follow some people who work on climate. go.bsky.app/Aa1sErQ
Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵

There's a Department for Leveling Up in the UK. Are they in charge of video games?

Say what you will about the UK, but the quick transition of power and the lack of election denial are refreshing to see.

It was nice meeting @ayeshatandon.bsky.social and @orladwyer.bsky.social at the #NegativeCO2Conference in Oxford. Here's their write-up for @carbonbrief.org. If we have robust MRV, including quantification of uncertainties, marine CDR could play an important role. www.carbonbrief.org/...#NegativeCO2Conference@ayeshatandon.bsky.social and @orladwyer.bsky.social at the #NegativeCO2Conference in Oxford. A golf cart is sufficient for most people in a city.

Behold $1300 socks. It's not fashionable to talk about consuming less as a climate solution because our economy is based on selling us crap that no one needs.

This display at the beach in La Jolla showing the relationship between atmospheric CO₂, global temperatures, and rising sea levels is *chef's kiss*. 🤌

Wow, it seems things haven't gone so well under the Conservatives in the UK. Maybe y'all should vote for one of the other parties tomorrow (and I don't mean the Brexit idiots). 😉 www.nytimes.com/inte...

Who says a flat stage of the Tour de France has to be boring? Congratulations to Sir Mark Cavendish on a record-breaking 35th Stage win. 🥳 #TDF2024

These geniuses think releasing 40+ billion tonnes of CO₂ a year to the atmosphere does nothing but that chemtrails are real and cloud seeding is what's causing extreme weather events.

Google emits 14.3 million tonnes of CO₂ every year? That’s nothing 14,300 Orca direct air capture facilities can’t fix.

With #Beryl barreling across the Caribbean as the earliest cat. 5 on record, let’s remember that things are just going to get worse as we continue to consume nearly 100 million barrels of oil every day.

Just FYI we’re entering a summer Covid wave right now (especially western regions in the US); you can see it in the CDC wastewater plot here (and anecdotally a bunch of my friends are suddenly testing positive). www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

We’re making a lot of plastic. In the nearly 70 years between 1950 and 2019, we produced a total of ~9.5 billion tonnes of plastic. But that's equivalent in weight to the amount of CO₂ we emitted to the atmosphere during the first three months of 2024.
