I know everyone is focused on the asinine op-ed about not voting, but this is in the *news* section, and currently still the top non-Biden-debate story on the NYT app.

hi, are you doomscrolling? That's a reasonable reaction based on everything going on right now. You still need adequate time to rest and recover. Make an effort to get enough sleep, limit screen time before bed, and charge your phone away from your bedroom.

Illustrating that Chicago is better at arresting kids than offering them meaningful services, the police arrested 9 kids -- among 56 people total -- after Pride. At the city's recent rate, it would have taken about three months to get that number of kids through a basic course of social services.
The city set up a $10 million program to give social services to kids who get arrested. In 11 months, 35 kids got the full course of services -- about 1 for every 100 the cops arrest. Police have dragged their feet, and the city hasn't found a way to serve these kids without arresting them.

I was literally standing in my local Walgreens waiting for someone to open a locked cabinet so I could buy body wash when I opened Bluesky and read this headline. Absolutely deranged shopping experience.
wow I can’t believe their strategy of making it physically impossible to buy any of the number of objects I would gladly buy from them if they would just put it on a shelf and allow me to buy it without spending five minutes trying to find an underpaid worker with a key isn’t working out for them

Here’s @injusticewatch.org’s previous reporting on Judge Angela Petrone, who has now denied at least three post-conviction motions that were unopposed by prosecutors. The previous two decisions were overturned by appeals courts. interactives.injusticewatch.org/cook-county-...
Judge Angela Petrone declined to overturn Kevin Jackson's conviction even though prosecutors didn't oppose it and special prosecutors found "powerful evidence that Jackson may be innocent." Petrone has declined to vacate several other convictions when prosecutors didn't oppose it.

A disturbing but important read from my @injusticewatch.org colleague, Carlos Ballesteros. 2023 was the deadliest year at the Cook County Jail in at least two decades. Carlos looked into each of the 18 deaths and found supervision or medical care was an issue in at least half of them.

Rapidly reaching a breaking point where MLB’s rampant partnerships with gambling companies are endangering fans and players. Fun!
Gambling is causing an occupational health and safety crisis for athletic workers and the leagues they work for and sports media complex are entirely responsible because, as always, in capitalism value comes first and the worker might as well be dead at the end of the day. t.co/0kXATZZc1D
