Something I think about a lot lately is how much Nazi support there actually was in the US and if things had gone slightly differently we would not have been calling ourselves the good guys of WWII
I think about this ALL THE TIME lol. Eugenics, America First, racism, antisemitism, anti-immigration. We were SO CLOSE to going the other way, not just in the war, but moreso in our own domestic affairs.
And I think in failing to tell people that we have this belief that as a nation we will eventually get to the morally correct side and that just isn't true. It's how that "arc of the justice" King quote shifted from its origin and now is so removed it's basically used as magical thinking.
