Finally, #POTS in the headlines. My teen’s experience in the medical system has been absolutely fucking criminal. The problem can’t be just that doctors don’t learn this in med school, bc doctors are constantly learning. The underlying problem is condescension. www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08...
POTS cases are rapidly on the rise, but diagnosing it takes yearswww.abc.net.au Tess Hansen is among an increasing number of people being diagnosed with POTS — a condition associated with long COVID — but experts say doctors are not being taught enough about it, leading to long p...

My teen would still not be diagnosed if our family didn’t have the money to cough up to see a paediatric cardiologist. The article does mention covid, but why aren’t people screaming: Don’t want this?? Mask!!

This article says 1 in 5 Australians have Long COVID. Also: "A recent report by the Medical Journal of Australia projected that the 30-39-year-old age group followed by 20-29-year-olds would constitute the majority of long COVID cases among the Australian population by October this year."

Grateful that in this part of Australia, it costs nothing for a trans teenager to change their given name/s.

Great minds think alike (Also very silly ones, but let's not bother about that.)

My dad reckons this is a weird poem for an atheist to vibe with. It’s one of my absolute favourites. Maybe my favourite. I think my dad misunderstands my atheism.
It’s National Poetry Day in Aotearoa. Poetry will be heard in all the halls.

The club’s old tennis coach turned up to social games tonight. He’s in his 70s now and so annoyed at himself that the skills and experience are still there, he just can’t get to the ball quick enough. Playing community sport is a good reminder that we all age. There’s no getting round it.

I mean, he wouldn’t be the first Australian to get lost in his own property! I know a guy who grew up in a station in the whoop whoops who didn’t see a stranger until he moved away at the age of 10. The station is the size of a small country. Mind you, 300m from the house is a bit embarrassing 😁

So that was humidity related? Utah dry, BC humid I take it… I listened to a podcast the other day in which a doctor advised his young patients with POTS and related issues to choose their colleges based on climate.

Yes, I’m saying “winter” but of course colonial European seasonal language doesn’t apply. I do like my four seasons, but people from Darwin all seem to love the climate. I’ve never met anyone from NT who doesn’t miss it whenever they’re away for too long.

I can imagine. I grew up in Aotearoa where 35 degrees is painful. The Northern Territory is something else! I went there in winter myself, during a drought. Very strange to experience minus 5 overnight but not any moisture at all.

I live in a dry part of Australia, and yes, it’s by design! Even when it’s hot, it’s mostly bearable that way.

Agreed. That’s good. I didn’t want to give you any disclaimers. I will say that for an Outback movie you can’t go past Samson & Delilah. Which I know you already put on your list.

It does turn weird. I don’t think it succeeded in doing what it set out to do.

I have the same trouble seeing teenagers having fun (as teenagers usually are). I am very happy teenagers are having fun, but sad that my own teenager is at home in bed, alone.

Gaaah, I'm not personally eligible for this but I haven't seen any opportunity so cool in a loooong time.

A whole day with no appointments, and time to do whatever I want... and there is always plenty to do, if by 'do' we mean deep dives into whatever thing has caught my interest.

I'm not on anything right now, unless a banana counts, and can confirm: that's an olive-hunger inducing necklace.

Unless I latch the door to this room (hard to remember) the dog checks regularly to see if I'm eating (preferably something with peanut butter) then fucks off again, leaving the door wide open, letting out the heat. At least in summer the door will remain open for air-conditioning purposes.

At least in summer the washing will get good and dry. I can't think of another good thing about summer. Those are the two things.

I'm so sorry. For you and for Daisy.

I have a GP appointment this morning so can't do anything else until that's over. Naturally. This is what I thought the jig-saw puzzle was going to be good for--filling in small blocks of dead time--but turns out I can't focus on that, either.

Oooh, I like this one, though I probably shouldn't because it reminds me of bush fires.
