“Yes, the Democratic conventions of 1968 and 1924 were total successes,” seems to be a genuine belief among certain well placed people who have, I guess, never read even a single book?

They’re very much persuaded by the good example set when Matt Santos fought off a floor challenge from Eric Baker. Of course, this only ever happened on The West Wing, but still: in their lifetime, it happened.

I do love pretending The West Wing is real life, but I also do think the New York Times and Washington Post have this in their heads for how they think it would go in real life.
