Seriously though, I find it so difficult to understand why the largest website in the world can’t see that a new account whose only post is ‘daddy, I lonely tonight and need a strong man for company, DM me’ might be worthy of a temporary activity pause?
One of the most fascinating things about generative AI is the businesses and states that are using it are largely doing “we’ve sped up this lengthy process”, whereas the tech companies’ largely seem to be going “we made this thing you like worse”.
There's even internal contrasts within tech companies. Deep Mind, a Google owned company, are doing really good and useful AI stuff with enormous utility for scientific research, while the rest of Google is screwing up their search algorithms and inflicting shitty art on users that nobody wants.
Yeah. I have a self-denying ordnance on Google because a lot of my friends work at DeepMind, but I think it’s a really good demonstration both of the divide on AI, but also just how much management matters.
Demis Hassabis is the real deal and likely to get a Nobel prize in time for the protein structure work. That has revolutionised a field that was practically dead before DeepMind got involved.
