Here's how a 50% voter turnout in the latest election and lower total votes for Labour in 2019 is good for democracy, actually 👇 🧵 (1/2726)

Actually it was 60%, this is even bettef for democracy, that 10% makes all the difference! Second lowest turnout since 1885!

Labour: 23500 votes per seat Tories: 56k vps Greens: 485k vps Democracy!

But the system let Labour win a supermajority, why would they change it :)

Yeah. The *point* is that Labour and Tories forever remain the big two. The system deliberately shuts out other parties and Labour intentionally kneecap their own election chances to make sure they never have to work to stay Most Loyal Oppo.

You know what if I didn't have a lesbian coming over for lunch I'd actually do statistical analysis of the election results and compare them to a dominant-party PR country (Croatia)

Gotta say it sounds like you're using your time a lot more wisely with that first option

2726/2726 ...So I'm sure we can all agree, it's more important for everyone that the left wing never reach power even if they're extremely popular and people vote for them

Wow, so true! I for one welcome our new neoliberal overlords

Don't blame me, I voted Kodos

That episode is 28 years old and just keeps becoming more and more relevant

on the one hand fptp in the uk is terrible as it annihilates the left on the other hand it annihilates the reform party who would otherwise have come third in the election so its impossible to say whether its bad or not
Avatar
I think when people are disenfranchised it's hard for us to draw conclusions about their voting habits - 40% of the population didn't vote, I'd guess Reform's vote share wouldn't be looking so big after that You are kinda right, except that you're sort of arguing for things being less democratic

i'm referencing the dril drunk driving tweet!

OH. RIGHT. I'VE SEEN TOO MANY PEOPLE MAKE THESE POINTS UNIRONICALLY, MY BRAIN HAS BEEN POISONED
Avatar
Eh. "Silent majority of left-wing voters" is a myth honestly, people get equally riled up to vote away from centre in both directions. Lower turnout always benefits centre parties.
Avatar
I think that's usually true except that in the UK rn there are no real left parties except maybe greens (that get any kind of vote share or are even nearly as mainstream as Reform), I think in this election specifically the left would've performed better
Avatar
Meanwhile, here I am in the US thinking about how you at least _have_ an iota of third party representation. 😅
Avatar
Yeah your system is fucked beyond repair and you should vote for the neoliberal warhawk instead of the Christo-fascist dictator and I can't believe those are your options
Avatar
And then you should probably do everything you can to overthrow a system where those are your options but that's easy for me to say
Avatar
I don't know about the UK, but I have to imagine a lot of spooks in the EU and other NATO countries are weighing their options verrrrrrry carefully.
Avatar
And yet, even the faintest whiff of anti-electoralism sends liberals into a frenzy! I have to imagine they're not _really_ planning against another J6 attempt.

Yeah, I think some people fully haven't understood the gravity of the situation, this isn't a regular vote, you are living in Weimar America
