Wow. Meta has blocked all links to the Kansas Reflector—the nonprofit newsroom that broke the story of the Marion County Record police raid—likely because they published a column this morning criticizing the platform's censorship of climate change-related ads. kansasreflector.com/2024/04/04/f...

I'm gonna need all 435 of you who reposted above to read and share this, thank you
NEW: A local Kansas news site published a column critical of Facebook—then Meta banned all their links. I talked to the site's editor about the attempt to silence them and the possibility of lawyering up: www.thehandbasket.co/p/facebook-k...

I did, and now the content remains removed (I guess?) but the warning against my FB account has been reversed.

This is the Kansas Reflecter. They are the best local paper here in our neck of the woods, IMO. They keep us updated on our legislature, school boards, etc. They’ve been targeted for harassment by the local sheriff who raided their offices and homes, ultimately killing the 94 yo owner, Joan Meyer.

You know, I got a notice from them this morning about this. I figured it was a mistake.

do you have a screenshot of the notice?

My pleasure. I thought it was weird. I even went to the link and used a few free malware scanning sites too. I sent FB screenshots of the "all clear" notices.

Are you able to see if your post was restored? It seems like they're allowing you to post links again (except for the column critical of FB), but didn't know if that meant old posts were no longer flagged
Avatar
I received the exact same notice, though I didn’t have the foresight to screenshot it

Here are two of mine if you need more:

Same, it claimed it was a Cybersecurity issue. 🙄

Have you checked if anything has been reported about ad networks you use? This stuff has happened before with bad ads getting sites flagged

In Canada, where all news orgs are blocked on FB due to blackmailing the government about its FB-taxing legislation, FB has extended the privilege of "news organization" to... the CJPME, the country's premier Pro-Palestinian advocacy group. So now they can't post links to Facebook.
Avatar
Municipal websites and government websites also got censored by Facebook. They're a straight-up menace.
Avatar
The link tax is a bad idea for completely separate reasons, just raise general tax on the company and subsidize news directly, but taxing links has always and will always be bad

Just tried posting this piece to Facebook and I also get an “upload error.” kansasreflector.com/2024/04/04/w...

That’s why my friends and I refer to it as Fascist Book. It needs a good treating like we did with “X”. Facebook is now completely useless for anything other than selling your data and stealing your photos for its AI.
Avatar
I'm stealing fascist book, that's great

So THAT'S why Those People took my post from last August about the story down. For "cybersecurity" reasons.
Avatar
I have an article from 2022 where I wrote about Trump’s weakening of epa laws and the effects on the ecosystem and food supply. It was also taken down as a cyber security threat today.
Avatar
That's...bizarre. Why today? I mean, I kinda get the Kansas Reflector thing; they ran an opinion piece critical of Meta this morning, so the whiny guy who owns Meta took down a link to them. But why your piece?
Avatar
Yep, fb notified me it removed a post from a couple years ago and I was confused until I realized it was a link to a Reflector story. They can really use support, it's one of the few quality journalism outlets in KS.
Avatar
Their editor @claywires.bsky.social isn't on here much but I know he'd appreciate sharing the word.
Avatar
Just spoke to his colleague. Story coming on www.thehandbasket.co
Avatar
I had the same thing happen.
Avatar
An article was marked as spam and pulled down.

They deleted two of my posts linking to the Reflector this morning - thanks for this news it makes everything a lot clearer!
Avatar
I'm Canadian. We're not allowed ANY news via Meta.

My decision to abandon all FB properties is reaffirmed in spades.
Avatar
they were okay with all the Russian disinfo running rampant on their platforms, cyber bullying and suicide, stalking, etc. but this is where they draw the line
Avatar
Tried sharing it from the FB link on the website with the article and got this.
Avatar
Avatar
I tried to post the article a little while ago. “The link goes against our community standards.” Cybersecurity threat, my ass.

Avatar
Not sure if the same, parallel or different: FB just turned off access to Green Left, entirely [this from Twitter]. FB did this before, no explanation so community rebuilt it. Elsewhere, Meta keeps 'losing' posts by WorkingClassHistory on Instagram. Almost like Zucks has an ideology at play. 😐

Avatar
Yep! They removed a Kansas Reflector article I was quoted in about Taylor Swift FROM OCTOBER

Avatar
I had wondered what had happened. Well. That's nice.
Avatar
did you get a notification about it?
Avatar
Yes and I filed to have it checked. Not that I expect anything.
Avatar
do you have a screenshot you could share?
Avatar
No, I didn't think about it at the time.
