Bait-and-switch tactics are a surefire way to torpedo morale. Last year, my office got an email asking us what we'd do with $1,000. We thought we were getting a surprise bonus. Nope. We were rolling out a new product -- a credit card -- for which we could earn a commission for selling. (1/)
I once worked in an office with terrible morale. To address this problem, Management announced that we were getting a puppy. The puppy was coming at the end of the month. There was a contest to name the puppy. When the puppy arrived, it was a plushie that you had to go into the boss's office to hug

The $1,000 thing was supposed to incentivize us to push the credit card on people, not a guaranteed thing. Needless to say, everyone was pissed. Most of us were talking about paying down debts with that money. Businesses need to be clear and explicit with their promises and follow through. (2/2)
