We talk about how old Dem officials are but the Republican judges are all old enough to remember this (esp. Reagan). This is a longstanding humiliation, not something new or specific to Trump. They believe checks on GOP presidents are inherently wrong, and they finally got the chance to codify that.
It was very traumatic for Republicans to have Nixon resign in disgrace & then 13 years later have Reagan close to being impeached (what saved him as much as anything was an implicit "he's too senile to have been knowingly involved" argument). Partisan hacks like Roberts have never forgotten this.

Like I’ve been saying:
i think we should see the Trump v. United States ruling as a group of Republican apparatchiks taking their opportunity to vindicate Nixon and write the unitary executive into the Constitution. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/02/o...
Opinion | Your Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card Is Ready, Sirwww.nytimes.com The Nixonian theory of presidential power is now enshrined as constitutional law.

We also shouldn't discount the role humiliation (and fear of it) plays in motivating conservative policy.

Take the Iraq invasion by Dubya, for example.
