Offensive as fuck, and The Economist should google “FDR.”
IMO this is a straight-up ageist and ableist image, no?

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.
(1852) Frederick Douglass, "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July" •www.blackpast.org On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass was invited to address the citizens of his hometown, Rochester, New York. Whatever the expectations of his audience on that 76th anniversary of the signing of the D...

Four months ago, the Economist thought the country was being run pretty well.

It's pretty interesting what the media decides is front page news and what they don't decide is front page news! Trump being a child sex abuser with close connections to Jeffrey Epstein somehow doesn't merit the same coverage as "unnamed Dem insider has concerns about Biden's age"
I saw this was trending and had to google it "The post alleges that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for this year's presidential election, "forced" young girls to "perform lesbian sex acts."
Donald Trump, Katie Johnson allegations: Everything we knowwww.newsweek.com Allegations from a lawsuit that was dismissed in 2016 are circulating on social media.

Fuck the Economist for this. Also fuck that we are so slow to learn.

It also appears this mendacious fool was lying about not voting. Which was publicly available information the fact checkers at the Times apparently failed to look for. bsky.app/profile/bubb...

When I first saw this I thought "no, that can't possibly be true." But alas, the Times did indeed choose today of all days to publish a right winger's recycled piece about how they don't vote, failing to mention that the author basically thinks absolutist theocracies are cool.
On INDEPENDENCE DAY they published this. ON THE FOURTH OF JULY 2024 THE NEW YORK TIMES TOLD PEOPLE NOT TO VOTE. I'm furious.

History will recall that the New York Times, that bastion of "the liberal media," on July 4, 2024 chose to give prime space on their op-ed page to a theocratic absolutist who argued that people shouldn't vote, even though he himself has voted in the last 2 elections (but nowhere is that mentioned).

For no reason at all I've found myself thinking about John Dean's August 16, 1971 Nixon administration memorandum entitled “DEALING WITH OUR POLITICAL ENEMIES." Presumably such memos have now been deemed totally legal and cool by the Supreme Court.

i don't think a "nice guy" persona is a sign of someone secretly being a bad person. men with "i'm a huge piece of shit" personas have done this shit. so have men with "i'm just a regular guy" and "i'm a serious thinker" and "i'm a huge mess but fun." personality is not really what is at issue here.

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

I think this is exactly right, Trump has retained verbal fluency and that makes him SEEM less elderly even though he’s spouting gibberish
have said this before but trump’s brain is pretty obviously far more cooked than biden’s if you listen to what they actually say. but the presentation - basically trump being a spaz - makes trump *look and sound* less cooked to many people i think

guess they have to update the citizen test now
They are pretty moving (having participated myself as an immigrant ) And every one of them were tested on the question “is anyone above the rule of law in America”

Every time one of these dumb stories comes up I have to remind people that because of a tie in one district, control of one of the Virginia houses was decided by drawing lots, so yeah every vote matters www.npr.org/2018/01/04/5...
Virginia Republican David Yancey Wins Tie-Breaking Drawingwww.npr.org Each candidate's name was placed in a film canister; those were then placed into a bowl and one name was drawn.

Happy ideal to aspire to, indeed.
but think of how nice it was when you didn't have to spend that mental energy every four years trying to decide, and instead could go about an idyllic life of carefree leisure

Anyway, billionaires spend a lot of money on depriving their opponents of the right or will to vote, and they aren't opening their wallet out of the kindness of their hearts. It's because it does, when all is said and done, matter quite a lot

This is a dumb article, but also isn't the author's first rodeo, and his other writing shows the real reason he doesn't vote "But my principal reason for declining to take part in elections is moral. It involves, I suppose, a private objection to democracy itself." theweek.com/articles/802...
Here it is, the dumbest thing you will read today www.nytimes.com/2024/07/04/o...

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

I swear to god there is a guy here in this cafe explaining to a woman about how there wasn't GRAVITY before Newton "made it up." One of his proofs is "how do you think they made the pyramids?"

yes, the point is that legal even allowed them to repeat it says something. it'll take time for any outlet to do their own independent reporting to corroborate, so we can only wait and see.
