While direct file was just a pilot this year, if you assume a $40 filing fee using Turbotax or similar, (or equivalent in time to do them by hand), that's a minimum of $4 billion savings per year for US taxpayers. And most people pay more than that.

Holy crap the tax return industry is such a pure scam. Not just the filing fees, but the additional junk they pile on that mostly only lower income people pay. A person eligible to file a basic return to get a $400 refund might only get $175 walking out of a tax prep shop.

From what I recall reading, IRS computers were practically as old as ENIAC before this admin.
