The country has already moved so far to the right on things like this that republican govs have to go looking for issues to one-up each other on the crazy scale. No food for poor kids, no water breaks for construction workers, etc.
It also burnishes the "anti-government", "pro-rugged individualism" bonafides of maga pols.

Churches see a way to get money by opening "schools" that are mostly church members watching kids fill out workbooks. And it probably helps boost church membership to have a tie to the parents. Parents like that kids who struggled in traditional schools get good grades and awards.
Liberals instinctually object to using public tax dollars for religious indoctrination. Libertarians instinctually approve of giving children in failing schools a chance at a better education. But religion and quality are not top of mind to the churches starting these schools or the parents.

Almost like this non-public school bullshit, which has never made money and only serves to harm children, isn't helping children after all. Crazy that.

Before he won they offered Kasich the VP with the offer to let him do the presidenting while Trump focused on making America great again.
"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!

Oh Lord please tell me he didn't just play the "Trump is the candidate we want to face" card.
the current unholy alliance between the hipster left and pundit center around “why bother talking about trump when we can destroy the Dem president instead”

Apparently there are also Climaxes in Virginia, Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.

Good thread as always on jobs day from Ben.
OK, time for a 💹🧵: Starting with the unemployment rate, which ticked up to 4.1%. That's still low, but it marks the end of a historic period of unemployment at or below 4%. #NumbersDay

Thank you, PDX, for being so awesome. Fireworks are dangerous (and expensive), and their sound harms both our pets and some of us. I cannot properly explain what I go through, but it isn't a good time. This: 💙 Besides, Francis Scott Key wouldn't have been able to see any "rockets red glare" anyway.

The whole Eastern Oregon should merge with Idaho thing bothers me, not because it isn't true but because it just isn't that unique. Pretty much every state has a large segment that feels like it is not represented by the state gov't. E-OR gets to break away when NOLA gets to be its own state.
I have a million quips, but I'm too annoyed to say anything witty. Fuck off Idaho and eastern Oregon.

It cannot be emphasized enough that you should be checking your voting status early and often with whatever dept in your state is in charge of voter registration. Because these wakkos are everywhere now.
Finally, the lame stream media has discovered that vigilante vote challenges are the big new threat. What they've missed is that it's spread from Georgia to a dozen other states.
In Georgia, conservatives seek to have voters removed from rolls without official challengesapnews.com Conservative activists in Georgia and other states are using a new software tool as part of a broader effort to scrub voters from the rolls.

The States Project is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options for your campaign donations. Even beyond it, though, state legislatures deserve your attention. Next time you're tempted to send money to whoever's going to lose to MTG, send it instead to a contested state leg seat.
Looking for one person to join me today in donating to flipping both statehouses in Arizona to create a new trifecta for democracy. This is the smartest political donation we can make this year.

If you aren't happy with the current two parties, work to change the voting methodology (ranked choice, for example). Until then, everyone is choosing between the lesser of two evils, or having others do the choosing for them.
Telling people we're stuck in a 2-party system and outlining the consequences of choosing the far-right option is not "bullying" people into choosing Democrats. The US system sucks and we don't live in a fantasy world where self-righteousness gets you far.

Welp, Chevron doctrine has been overturned. Not surprising but huge implications for climate. Wish the mainstream media would break away from the post-debate coverage for just one sec to discuss this.

A few years ago, David Frum made an analogy on our podcast about Trumpism that I keep thinking about. Your friend tells you they're about to get a timeshare. You tell them "No, that's a very bad idea." They get the timeshare & it's bad. Are they mad at the guy who sold them it? No. Mad at you.
