A lot of the reason that I have weathered the erosion of my rights here in AL is because I am surrounded by a tradition of civil rights activism that remembers VIVIDLY how much worse it's been in living memory & has little time for panic. (Especially from those of us feeling it for the first time.)
Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”

I had a v. bad day when the AL trigger law went into effect and our AG got on the news and started telling people he'd prosecute us for aiding & abetting if we so much as gave someone gas money to get to a state where abortion was legal. All I can do is support my community & fight however I can.

(why I'm very glad to have @romancingthevote.bsky.social this week. because Alabama is not a deep red state, it's a state that is brutally voter suppressed in a violently racist manner.)
