Hey, advance planners! Like kidlit? How about horror? Then join me, Sami Ellis, and Mo Netz (and moderator Laura Parnum) on August 21 at A Novel Idea bookshop in South Philly! It'll be so, so, so much fun! #philadelphia #philly #kidlit #books

I am verklempt. My first book event for A Misfortune of Lake Monsters was tonight at Big Blue Marble, and folks turned out in a way I didn't expect even a little bit. Standing room only, and the book store sold out of copies. Stephanie Willing, my conversation partner, was amazing!

Every now & then an idea worms its way into my brain. My latest is to hand-make 10 or 20 copies of an as-of-yet un-acquired manuscript of mine called Meat Sweats--turn it into a really gorgeous book with deckle edged pages, hand-sewn signatures, & an embroidered cover as a limited edition thing. 1/

Well. My uni is indeed impacted--no access to the network drives. I've never been happier to mostly work off the school network.
A) I wonder what my husband's night was like since he works for one of the affected airlines. B) I'm wondering if I'll get up & find some aspect of my work day will be interrupted (I work for a major uni). I wouldn't be super sad--my first in-person book event is tonight...I'd like more prep time.

It was a mistake to ever trust a business with a Chief Threat Hunter

It's deviled egg-making day for an event on Saturday. Batch 1 is egg yolk-mayo-pesto (made with basil from my garden), topped with fresh pepper and Pistou basil (also fresh out of my garden). Batch 2 is egg yolk-sour cream-mustard-diced caper, topped with dill, capers, & pickled shrimp. Aw, yeah.

I started writing a short story today. I mean, I only wrote 150 words, but still... I started writing a short story today. That's good.

I would expect nothing less from someone who claims to be kind-hearted and compassionate while simultaneously supporting heinous programs and policies, thus demonstrating why there's been a mass exodus of SM's customer base. The free market has spoken, & the CEO clearly doesn't like it.

Hey, advance planners! Head to the Oxford Valley B&N one month from today for a seriously excellent panel on horror, spanning middle grade through adult! Pennsylvania really does have some spectacularly great horror representation... plus, look who's moderating!! Happy Summerween, y'all! #horror

I just performed the fastest blueberry harvest of my entire life: I was in the blueberry patch just now, which is in a netted tunnel with wooden stakes, and it started lightning overhead. I can't die tonight--I have my 1st event for A Misfortune of Lake Monsters on Friday!

Anytime it gets really hot outside, I start longing for good gelato. Without doubt, the best gelato I've ever had is in Bologna, Italy. But then I start thinking about my trip to Bologna and wandering into Chiesa della Santa & into the small side room to see St. Catherine of Bologna. 1/

This is the first time I've ever seen Columbia County, Pennsylvania (where I grew up) included in Appalachia. Of course, having seen this particular definition, it makes sense on some levels. Huh.
There are varying definitions of which places belong to the cultural region of Appalachia. None of them include Republican Sen. J.D. Vance's hometown of Middletown, Ohio.

Yes, I'm getting a pedicure today specifically so my toes will match the color of my book cover for my event at Big Blue Marble bookstore on Friday night. I have no chill. #philadelphia #bookevent

Explain your book/WIP in one short sentence badly: A tired monster just wants a place to sleep and a good meal in his belly, but these assholes kids won't leave the monster alone. A Misfortune of Lake Monsters, out now & ruining summer vacations everywhere.
Explain your book/WIP in one short sentence badly: A masked slasher is on a rampage, but the real villains are shitty parents.

This is how good I am at adulting: I woke up this morning and promptly forgot to attend my routine dentist appointment, so now I can't get in for a cleaning until OCTOBER. That said, I did get a full eight hours of sleep last night, which is nearly unheard of. Maybe there's hope for me after all.

A good friend that I had dinner with during (not at) Readercon gave me a lake monster shadow box to mark the publication of A Misfortune of Lake Monsters! The monster is Gaasyendietha, the monster of Lake Ontario, who is said to have either been born from a serpent egg or arrived here via meteor. ❤️

Missed this some time ago, and I'm procrastinating, so: Introduce yourself with some jobs you've done apart from what you do now: - grant writer - executive assistant (immigration law) - Barney the Dinosaur, handing out fruit-flavored string cheese at a mall - journalist - group sales, Sesame Place

I fully meant to buy a few horror poetry books at Readercon but was so overwhelmed by everything that I blanked. So what are your recommendations--specifically a collection that has come out in the last two years? #horror #poetry

Seat on flight acquired, now waiting for boarding back to PHL. Nonrevving means the first flight of the day as a strategy, every single time. It also means I was up at 3am to get to the airport, so a nap is in my future!

Readercon is over for me--I have an ass o'clock flight to make in the morning. Lots of good content, & I had the luck to finally meet a few folks in-person that I've only known online. Yay! I'm generally pretty bad at networking/approaching strangers--I'm always so sure I'm bothering people.

Wishing all good things to my HWA chapter members doing readings at Blobfest today!!!

Readercon is EXHAUSTING. I don't have the stamina/mental capacity needed to attend back to back panels/readings/signings AND be in public AND fake being extroverted/charming. It's maybe one of these, people... NOT all three.

I'm at least horizontal, which is good, but I'm laying here thinking more about going back to school for an M.Phil, continuing my masters-level horror studies, this time concentrating on food disgust in horror novels. My capstone creative work would be BONKERS.
I was up at 4am today so I could catch an early flight up to Boston for Readercon... and now I'm exhausted but cannot seem to catch the nap I very desperately need. Poop.
