It's always funny that even academics think using big words makes you look less intelligent. Non-scientists think scientists and mathematicians are constantly using big, fancy words. When in reality they're usually using normal words with very specific meanings.

It's weird how often I see leftists sneer at politicians who announce popular policies in order to gain more support. That's how it's supposed to work!

Explain your book/WIP in one short sentence badly: A masked slasher is on a rampage, but the real villains are shitty parents.

Jamelle Bouie is one of my favorite people to read and listen to, and it sucks that he was bullied off this site. If you like him, do listen to his podcast with John Ganz, Unclear and Present Danger. It’s only superficially about movies. Each episode is an incisive dive into politics and history.

Another asymmetry I think about a lot
Yes. I think liberals are bad at understanding when conservatives are working them because they worry that they really do disdain conservatives as people and it bothers them. It does not bother a lot of conservatives to disdain liberals at all. Many think their disdain is god ordained

This is a fun read, but what really jumped out was how much of the Cybertruck and other Teslas is controlled via screens. I'm not a car guy, but I like the idea of mechanical systems that anyone can maintain or modify. Replacing those with proprietary digital systems seems hostile to users.

this is a fascinating thread about the publication of Frankenstein, good to wake up to
This is a subtweet about Frankenstein because I don't want to be a dick, but I also want some facts out there. 1. Most novels at the time were anonymous. We can't make definite judgements about why Mary Shelley's name wasn't on it. It was common practice. The novel was barely respectable. 1/?

We’ve returned to the olden days, when word-of-mouth was the only real way to advertise. As an author, if you enjoy a book, please: tell your friends. Your group chat, your sewing circle, your family WhatsApp, your work Slack, the voice channel of your MMORPG guild, anything.
Hey, so. I understand that this is anecdotal and not research, but. It is WILD how useless social media has become for promo. It's a fucking disgrace, really.

I have covid again. Watched the new Godzilla x Kong movie today. It was stupid fun. The perfect thing to watch while in a sweaty, brainless fugue state and fighting off germs on the couch.

Just read a post suggesting that Troi's empathy is just an ability to hear the episode's background music when someone is speaking. This is now my personal canon.

Listen, Branaugh’s Much Ado has the “everyone takes a bath while the credits roll” sequence, which is possibly some of the sexiest minutes committed to film.

Inspiration, ideas, motivation, etc. often come after you start writing, not before. If you wait to feel it you'll never start. Start even if you don't want to. Then you'll feel it. Inspiration is often the result of putting in the work, not the impetus for it.
if u see this, quote-post with your tips for writers that no one gives anymore because they seem obvious (even though they're not)

1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers creeped me out as a kid. It's one of those movies that I revisited as an adult and it definitely holds up. A lot of that is because of Donald Sutherland's performance. I doubt he'd appreciate being thought of as a horror icon, but I'll remember him that way.

Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.
Under current law, you really couldn’t do much better than Biden’s FTC and NRLB. New Deal shit.
