I remember seeing Frost v Nixon and the audience laughed when Nixon (Frank Langella) said: "When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal." Even at the time, given the claims of GWB, I thought, "you people have no idea how mainstream this idea has gotten." And NOW...
Conservatives have never forgiven us for forcing Nixon to resign. Now almost exactly 50 years later they have finally enshrined Nixon’s crimes into law.
How’s this for Irony. One of the Nixon die hards and then chief enablers of Bush’s crimes was Dick Cheney and now his daughter will be tried for treason and sent to Guantanamo and no one can stop it. It’s positively Shakespearean
Between the neutering of the administrative state and the deifying of the executive, the court has created a heads I win tails you lose paradigm. Democrats will never be able to accomplish anything and Republicans can do whatever they want and stay in power forever.
At least as long as there's a Republican majority on the court. Once that changes, so does the paradigm. Crazy that the court is now the most powerful branch of government, and the legislative the least. Only took one term!
Yep.
Nixon's view of Presidential power remains the conservative ideal. It's the height of "political power exists to punish enemies and aid allies" thinking that motivates the modern right.
The rest of us view that quote with horror.
USA ON CUSP OF TYRANNY
The Supreme Court's ruling that shields the President frm prosecution in office kindles abuse of power&erosion of democracy. Trump's return to the White House is worry for coups and death of constitutional democracy, rule of law&America's global leadership!
