I posted 29 times and n the first half of this year - more than I accomplished in the entirety of 23, 22, 21, 14 or 13 Glancing at the statistics, one post is the runaway for most popular - about 2.5X the 2nd most popular and 4X the 3rd Care to speculate what was so popular?

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I found another of those micro-screwdrivers in my desk drawer the other day and was thinking back but I had completely forgotten about Clive's Ubik "literally shitting out beads" which resurfaced in my brain whilst reading your blog!

Academia friends, this week I’m discussing scientific conference talks and posters with my graduate student course. What are your top tips for how to give a good conference talk or a good poster presentation, how to design your slides or poster, or what not to do? 🧪

hi scientists 🧪 i'd love to hear your thoughts on bluesky! • what groups/people in science aren't here yet, that you want to see? • what can bluesky do to make it a better place for science comms? • what external tools do you use that should integrate bluesky support? • anything else!

An interesting aspect of science denialism is "crank magnetism": belief in one denialism increases the odds you have other denialist beliefs. - Young Earth Creationists are often Flat Earthers. - Many ID Creationists are also HIV/AIDS denialists. - Antivaxxers are often conspiracy theorists Why?

At least this article served as a useful reminder to be careful about paying attention to reports from consultants who lack any real-world expertise.

🧪Any time you think you understand viruses, they get weirder. Meet Jingmen tick virus (JMTV), the 1st multipartite virus of primates discovered. What's weird about it? Imagine a group of people who travel everywhere together, but in different cars. That's the JMTV genome.

This isn't EXACTLY photosynthesis, because it doesn't fix CO2 into sugars, but it's 'photosynthesis-like' & may be responsible for allowing the aphid to survive periods of environmental stress. Nature article on this topic: https://www.nature.com/articles/nature.2012.11214
Photosynthesis-like process found in insects - Naturewww.nature.com Aphids may have a rudimentary sunlight-harvesting system.
