A "generation" is defined by whatever editors and news segment producers find interesting. That's how you get this idea that everyone in Gen X was listening to Pearl Jam or whatever -- an illusion Gen Xers have benefited from, but that confuses people about politics.

Fun fact more people were listening to Garth Brooks than Pearl Jam and we only know that because Billboard changed the way it gathered data. Previously they just did a survey of record store owners to see what in their opinion people were gravitating towards.

Right--I was the only one of my friends that did not vote for reagan or bush. Not in touch with most of those people anymore but sure their politics would not surprise me

While I was at Lallapalooza, most of the people I went to high school with were at Van Halen with Sammy Hagar concerts and bonding over their secret love of yacht rock.

But I'm going to say most ppl that liked certain bands never listened to the lyrics anyway so did it really matter? Many ppl lost the plot early on.

I'm unsure how these "new" findings don't fit in nicely with data that age regardless of generational label positively correlates with reactionary politics and education negatively correlates with reactionary politics, a million interminable anecdotes in a million comment sections notwithstanding

Cobain and Vedder was a reaction against those types. They even wrote songs about them. Probably appealed to their contemporaries younger siblings as much as their peers
