just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

They would not have won the election on their own, but I'm laughing very hard about the influence the No Labels people would be wielding right now if they hadn't been bullied away.

We've known what's what about Biden from the jump. What we're learning fully now is how lazy the people running the party are. Purely reactive, a faith things will work themselves out till the last minute. Ironically, we saw this when they finally rushed to put Biden over Sanders in the first place.
President Biden’s campaign had a bright fund-raising spell immediately after Thursday's presidential debate, but many big donors were alarmed by his shaky showing. Some floated interventions and wondered about how to reach Jill Biden.
Major Democratic Donors Ask Themselves: What to Do About Biden?www.nytimes.com Some floated interventions and wondered about how to reach Jill Biden. Others hoped the president would bow out of the race on his own. Many came to terms with the low chances that he will do so.

Everything's complicated and my hesitation about replacing Biden up to now has been informed by polls showing other candidates not doing much better. But a lot of people seem remarkably certain that Harris specifically could not win a general election for reasons I think they should say out loud.

Me when I miss a deadline:
Writing is not linearly productive. You can write something no one wants and spend months or years on it; it’s not wasted time. It’s time spent learning how to do things you’ll put into practice elsewhere, so long as you don’t get discouraged and stop.

i don't even get where you go from here as the editorial board of the new york times. if biden doesnt step down and polls stay stable, then what? do you just keep insisting he should step down anyway? write another editorial being like we were wrong? pretend it never happened?

The funny thing is that The Beatles were on drugs almost from day one. By 1963, they had been playing the red light district in Hamburg on speed for years. "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You" -- this was a sound and energy that had been honed by amphetamines.
the beatles burst on the scene with i like girls girls like me lyrics and five years later they were all f-d up on drugs in india, writing like they're f-ing yoda. it was great.

the climate story right now is in a very weird state of flux a) the warming we've priced in is bad and really starting to show itself b) the renewable story is astoundingly good and getting better we are left with "warming is going to get worse but almost certainly not as much as it could have"
it's always important to demand better, but part of the reason that the story of climate policy isn't sticking is partly because bad news feels more plausible and partly because the people most invested in this policy understand its limits. www.notus.org/biden-2024/v... hard to sell "mixed-positive"

the fly in the ointment here is that the liberal bloc has previously been 100% on board with the court's project of making it impossible to prosecute political corruption—though the libs dissented here
Not that there weren't reasons to run against the court before, but "The justices who have taking a lot of bribes says it's okay to bribe elected officials" seems like the kind of thing that an average voter can both understand and get mad about

ChatGPT can now accurately tell you who I am, but if you ask it to recommend some articles, it will continuously generate a string of pieces I have never actually written instead of retrieving real ones from the Internet. On this last round, one was called "The Case for Political Violence."
Did I ever tell you all about the time someone introduced me, at a large event, with erroneous info because they had “asked” ChatGPT for my bio?

I mean, she did beat Trump in the popular vote by about 2 points. On this day in 2020, Biden was up by about 10 in the RCP average and won by about 5. In 2012, Obama was up by 3 and won by 4. In 2008, Obama was up by 6 and won by 7. Doesn't seem like an obvious record of presidential failure to me.
On this day in 2016, 538 had Hillary up by 7 points on Trump. Over the last eight years we've seen polls repeatedly fail, and yet I've never seen an election in which smart people have obsessed about polls, especially strange ones like this.

In six swing states that Biden narrowly won in 2020, a little more than half of voters classified as likely to decide the presidential election say threats to democracy are extremely important to their vote for president, according to a poll.
Trump trusted more than Biden on democracy among key swing-state voterswapo.st A poll of swing-state voters shows that Americans rate threats to democracy as an important issue, but that the president has yet to convince them he is the one to defend it.

Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.
Under current law, you really couldn’t do much better than Biden’s FTC and NRLB. New Deal shit.

The pro-Israel lobbying aside it is a little weird that Biden, Jeffries etc. are okay with an organization that gives tens of millions of dollars to Republicans who helped Trump attempt a putsch being involved in Democratic primaries.

What would liberalism look like if we reimagined it from these foundations? Suspicion of inequality and concentrated power, egalitarianism, labor orientation, feminism, social justice, thick conceptions of flourishing, non-ideality, political practice-orientation. These ideas are all there.
