Probably the worst social harm caused by facebook is that it deprived us of local businesses having a website created by someone’s nephew
Avatar
You joke, but do you know how many kids learned to code and got their first freelance jobs from that sort of thing?
Avatar
I don’t think they‘re joking, from a professional angle it’s beautiful seeing someone discovering and learning design principles even if they are far away from any industry standard

I lucked out doing exactly this for a very rural hospital. No nepotism involved, but I definitely had no credentials or experience, I was just the only guy in town "good with computers" apparently.

Sometimes you still come across a local pizza place or something with a geocities-ass website and at least one section with an “under construction” gif it’s wonderful

This place in my hometown looks like they closed over Covid but the website remains www.killerpizzafrommars.com/home/

Ohhh that star background brings back memories...
Avatar
That’s amazing. I appreciate their commitment to HTTP too. But definitely don’t show that site to Q-Anon.

[James Hetfield voice]The we-ebsite remains!
Avatar
My experience in NJ is generally: the less functional the website, the better the pizza.
Avatar
Closed over covid? This website is websiting like it's 1999
Avatar
It looks like they actually closed more recently, and have a second location that’s still running
Avatar
Oh! *clicks through* We’re stay-cationing in Oceanside right now. Maybe we can go next week. Sweet!
Avatar
(We went to the Escondido location several years ago when we lived in San Marcos.)

I've eaten there! It was definitely the best pizza in that strip mall. I hope they brought all those '50s/'60s robot toys to Antiques Roadshow.
Avatar
I was in a McDonald's with all that retro kitsch around in it, and I happen to look closely at something and I discovered that it was all recently manufactured, probably in Malaysia or somewhere similar. The movie cards were recently printed. The '50s toys were knockoffs. Fake pinball machine, too.
Avatar
With a mega corporation like McDs, TGI Friday's or Cracker Barrel, I'd expect that. But this joint didn't have those pretensions. This (and I assume the second location) looked like a passion project from some kid in their 20s. I think most of the pieces were authentic.
Avatar
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that there are some authentic things out there.
Avatar
They're still open! I remember going there in high school.
Avatar
I’ll never be brave enough to turn my websites into such glorious throwbacks
Avatar
They are advertising Mother’s Day
Avatar
They closed?!? Damn, that was an awesome place! I love black light kitsch. It was pretty good pizza too. ☹️

That pizza cursor made me nostalgiac for those goofy DHTML effects like sparkly cursor trails

Selling and tags out of the trunk of my Camry, cash only.
Avatar
Geocities for the HTML win 💪
Avatar
why is it always the pizza places? because the website for this pizza bar in seattle is also delightfully retro and i love it www.dinostomatopie.com
Avatar
this was literally how i got into software

Broke: using the psychology degree I spent 4 years and a ton of money on to build my career Bespoke: building my career on the skills I starting teaching myself when I was 10 so I could make better Dragon Ball Z fan websites
Avatar
Twitter imploding motivated me start learning about computers again

Avatar
I’m a nephew who mostly knows HTML tags, this is the only birthright I have been denied
Avatar
Like, honestly, that is an unimaginable loss. Again, the centralization of everything just sucks.
Avatar
a friend had this idea that he worse a pizza place's website was, the better the pizza probably was; facebook made that metric far less usable
Avatar
There's a certain truth to that. Websites are a form of advertising, and the more a company needs to advertise, the less word of mouth they're generating. The less word of mouth they generate, the worse their products are. Expensive ad campaign = Bad products

I'd still rather have that crappy, amateurish website than a business page that's effectively paywalled* inside Facebook for those who don't subscribe. *Not with direct fees, but at the higher cost of surrendering privacy to the global data broker that is Meta.

I offer this absolute banger of a website for a fairly high end and beloved restaurant: petersinn.com it takes inexplicably long to load, the cheetah print background must be 10 gigs or so
Avatar
Avatar
This is fantastic and I love that you need to email for reservations
Avatar
right? like this website is updated *weekly* to keep up with their menu
Avatar
I worked at a restaurant 20+ years ago where that was part of my job. And I had to do the updates in the html.
Avatar
I wish we could go back to those days, I miss my webring
Avatar
I would not be mad if we brought back webrings. I suppose that’s a bit like back links now but I want an actual webring.

That was stupendous - thank you. THE ANIMATED WHISK
