What's this about looking for a motive in the Trump shooting. Motive pretty clear, he didn't like the man. Do we really need to unearth the finer points of his ideology. I thought we agreed to stop doing that. Also, by definition he was unwell. He planned and attempted a Presidential assassination.

You forgot the first major sporting event of the day, which just ended. Good start for Spain in England...

Indeed. And all counterfactual hypotheticals about assassinating Hitler are just hypothetical, we’ll never know. Another possible outcome from that scenario would have been Nazis digging in heels, bc movements don’t typically magically dissolve when leader dies. As always, more complicated than that
Comparative political scientist here. Assassination attempts are *always* bad, regardless of the target's politics.

Of course the German cycling infrastructure is better, no one would deny that. It’s just always striking to see the difference in rule following.

Solid point, but also evokes the relative orderliness of German transportation. In good ole Nyc, none of these cyclists would be sticking to the bike lanes. They would be weaving in and out of the automobile traffic, and definitely not obeying the traffic lights/signs!

Never bad to be early! Most reputable journals will have quotas for how long until they ask you again, how many times they ask per year, etc

Aha. Maybe we're talking to diff people. Lots of scholars I know are open about their views on govt policy. But I'm sure not everyone. And depends on time + place. I'm a huge believer that human rights not up for debate in my classrooms, but w students I don't push preferences on specific policies.

This is a tough one. Of course I agree that neutrality doesn't exist. But I fear a future where research is yet another avenue for naked partisanship. That leads to censoring research questions + fiddling w analysis to distort findings in ways consistent w one's political views. I think that's bad.

I think goal of research is to 'discover' things, which requires getting as close to 'true' facts/patterns as possible. Those facts/patterns are not about helping or hurting migrants. But of course if one cares about migrant rights, one should be engaged as a citizen, informed by one's research.

My colleague @cdsamii.bsky.social has nice piece about a problem-centered approach to research (cyrussamii.com?p=3682), which is relevant here, for using research to improve the world. One could focus on improving the world in ways that are good for migrants. But the two might not always be the same

I'm not disagreeing, also perplexing to me. The idea of currying favor with a future Trump administration is interesting, but seems to involve a lot of assumptions on their part, which are probably not wise. But, we're all flawed...

I'm not even sure how useful it is to apply "optimal" to life. Of course don't want to purely be buffeted about by winds. But, so much you cannot control, one has to build that into expectations. That said, clearly huge rewards for early specialization. Whether that is 'optimal' is diff question..
Avatar
That is even worse. Unless the leadership is outright Republican partisan. Which is fine, although not the typical brand of the paper. Either way, a good reminder that all humans are infuriatingly fallible.

I thought you were writing satire, but you appear to be serious?

I read that and wondered about the motivations for going into such a deep dive. I’m not saying the topic should be forbidden but it does seem like they ride the controversial news cycles with very little apparent reflection (see also C Gay ‘plagiarism’)

The point stands. If they all play soccer, much easier to identify + develop world class talent than in chaotic athletic development landscape of the US. That said, clearly USMNT is ranked highly. Despite all of our challenges. One can always improve, but structural issues w comparisons.
Avatar
Lots of gnashing over the USMNT defeat, as such a large country cannot produce winning squads against much smaller countries. But surely that needs to adjust for the fact that US youth sports fragment athletic talent in 100 different directions!

Interesting proposal. I suppose clearer labels not bad, although wonder if people tune out. Also, is anyone really duped when buying junk food. Don't think 'health' is motivation for those purchases! And real principles very easy: buy food w few/simple ingredients. www.nytimes.com/2024/06/30/o...

Funny take. Interesting to hear author claim waiting in line for 1+ hours to buy $24 bagel sandwich makes her feel savvy. I would have thought exact opposite! Especially bc sandwich dilutes bread/bagel experience, and toppings nothing special you can't do yourself www.nytimes.com/2024/06/30/o...

Sure, lots of possible terminological wordplay. I suppose it depends on what angle one chooses to intervene.

Looks very cool indeed. Look at all those heavy clothes people are wearing in late June. Many 'summer' climates indeed!

Trump's danger may not be 'breaking news' as it is an old story. But it's certainly a relevant current events story that someone like him is still essentially a toss-up for becoming President again!
Avatar
Lots of ways to measure it, starting with all the money needed for campaigns and the various industries associated with that. It’s always a balancing act but then measure the tradeoffs between campaigning and governing.

So that’s the pitch? We can work around this with supplements? Unfortunately feels a bit weak as a campaign slogan! Although don’t get me wrong, I think a new candidate would be destructive at this point. AND, Trump has so many weak points to exploit But fence-sitters probably need a better pitch
