Around the world, the left keep saving the center while getting nothing but condescension from the haughty, dubiously-democratic ingrates.
The French are world leaders at "The govt sucks, I'm voting for my ideal, no way I'll compromise, you compromise" (round 1) followed by "The only way to stop the far right? Ugh, fine." (round 2). Often a responsibility placed more on the left, but this time the center too, perhaps more. Let's see...

This is incredible news out of France - the left really saved the center's bacon. It has always seemed that the true cordon sanitaire for the center and right in the amnesiac 21st century was not against the far right but the left.

The fact that the US is actively pretending that the Israeli government has accepted a deal that it hasn't accepted at all probably isn't good.

On this Independence Day weekend, a reminder that the 1st US civil war was the Revolution, which had Brits fighting Brits. And there were lots of Loyalist colonists opposing Patriots, tho few Loyalists fought. (Plurality of colonists were neutral.) Lots of other smaller, localized US rebellions too.

Wow, it's weird how the media narrative of a far right populist wave keeps crashing against reality in every country that actually requires them to win a majority of votes to take power
The 2nd leading pollster projects a similar result—if anything a higher range for the Left coalition. This wld be a much stronger result than expected for the Macron bloc. If confirmed, key takeaway: Left & Macronist voters transferred onto each other much more than expected. Clear anti-RN front.

JUST IN: Polls closed in France. Exit polls show surprise: —Left coalition (New Popular Front) projected first. (!) —Far-right (RN) has lost its bid to take power. Anti-RN front appears to have worked very well. —No bloc close to majority. Follow this 🧵 for results and more:

The 2024 Mandate for Leadership is much more radical than even the 2016 edition. It is the only significant policy planning document by any Republican-aligned organizations. We have no reason to believe that it won't guide a second Trump Admin's agenda. static.project2025.org/2025_Mandate...

The Republican Party is no longer a coalition dominated by center-right, cosmopolitan, business-y types. It's now dominated by the Christian nationalist faction. For the first time since 1980, it looks more like Heritage than AEI or the Chamber of Commerce.

Why was Mandate so successful? In part, because Reagan bought in. But mostly because presidential candidates don't do a lot of real policy planning, just outlines for big campaign promises. The Center for American Progress has done similar work for Democrats.

I'd like to add some historical context to the discussions around Project 2025. The discourse misses why Project 2025 is so important. As I write about in my book, Heritage has built something like Project 2025 for every election since 1980, but this time it's different. Big 🧵

I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

about once a week, i have to explain to someone on the phone that the police have no obligation to do anything for you and, even if their refusal literally leads to your murder, the courts have been clear that there's no case to pursue

i don't talk about it as much in this piece but it could not be more obvious that dressing yourself up in the rhetoric of America as irredeemably evil might play well to the online crowd but wrapping the very same idea in a red white and blue flag is how you win real change

Kagan wasn't just blowing smoke with "we're all originalists now." Sotomayor's dissent is originalism. Roberts and Thomas opinions are, as Radley aptly puts it, "shitposting libs-owning," with a couple of cherry-picked misrepresented Founder quotes that wouldn't pass muster for a high school essay.

I honestly don't know what trading out Biden for Harris would do w/re to the outcome of the election, but I do know the GOP would go way overboard on the overt racism/sexism because the constraints that would have stopped that were pushed out by Trump.
